Wireless router stops internet connection to modem during install

I have a Motorola SB5120 Surfboard modem that I got from Comcast. I just bought a Netgear Wireless-G Router WGR614v9 to connect my laptop wirelessly so I don't have to use the Ethernet cable anymore. I have internet when I begin installing the router and my modem works great. Then the instructions tell me to unplug the power source of the modem and hook up the modem to the router with the Ethernet cord. When I re-plug the powersource into the modem, only the Power light and the PC/Activity light comes on. I have no internet connection what so ever. In order for me just to get internet straight from my modem without the router, I have to unplug the power cord again from my modem and use the Comcast CD to reset all of my settings to the default settings. There's no powercycle or reset button on my modem and I wait at least 2 min before plugging in. I don't know what's wrong!

Yes, everything comes with a little picture to go along with the installation instructions. I follow the picture to a T. I'm by no means a hi-tech person and I can't configure my own settings or anything like that but I do know the basics and have hooked up wireless routers on my own laptop and others before. This has never happened.

    XP Or vista?

Do a reset on the router, make sure you are on the latest firmware, and test without wireless security.

If none of that helps, then you may have a bad wireless radio in the router.

I have been with Comcast for 6 years. Leasing their SB5120 modem for 3-4 years, no problem. Then bought one myself and no problem for 2 years with Negtar wireless router. For the past few days, it started...

generally a wireing issue or signal issue i assume by this time you have it fixed by the date. you can check 192.168.100.1 in a web browser and it should show the signals. if recieve is flashing then the downstream is either out of range or something else. it wont go to upstream until it locks onto downstream first.

Why won't my motorola will not allow me a wireless internet connection to my ps3

Because the SB5120 does not have wireless.

Sorry for that news.

You should get a "wireless router" and add that AFTER the modem to get wireless.

Port Forward on Comcast Motorola SB5120

Are you just using a modem and NO router? This modem has no NAT so there is no way to open ports.

Internet connection issue. Is it setup or internet service

The problem would be comcast. Your connections are setup correctly. The modems do not control the internet traffic flow, they are made to produce maximum flow.
If more people use the internet, the less flow it will have.
Check all internet options settings, and make sure EVERTHING is set to automatic

Cannot set up Motorola Surfboard SB5120 modem

This usually means something is not correct with your incoming signal. If your cable wire into the modem is being run off an amplifier in the wall this could be effecting your service. If the signal is too strong the modem won't be able to communicate for internet.

You could check the incoming wire to see if it is running off an amplifier. If it is you would need to run a new line that is not on the amplifier. I would recommend comcast coming out to check the signal frequency and make the necessary adjustments.
