The Blue Screen of Death. Yes, I have had it many times. You can try to restart the computer using the F8 to enter safe mode. Then shutdown and restart. This usually happens when a file has been corrupted, normally by a virus or improper shutdown. If this doesn't repair the problem your left with trying to re-install the OS to fix the bad file. If yo can't get to safe mode your only option is trying to re-install the OS. If you see an option to install or repair choose repair to get the machine back up. I saw this a lot with ME, if you have Windows ME, get Windows XP and upgrade since Windows ME has so many bugs that XP would be a much better option.

Sometimes there are conflicts that cause errors to show up, I am glad you mentioned that no new hardware or software have been installed. That helps to rule out some things. At this juncture, if it only occurred once, reboot and don't worry. If you see it again, it will most likely tell you a error occurred at such and such a place and the computer will now shut down. If this happens try to write down the offending part or error and contact us again. However, it is always prudent to backup your computer. You can go in to the setup and look in you event log to see if it was a heat event that will cause your computer to shut down. Should this screen appears again, try the following:

Since it is a Toshiba Tecra if you are not worried about losing data on the laptop you can try turning on the laptop and start pressing the zero key. It should give you the option to restore your laptop if you haven't deleted the restore partition on the laptop.

press f8 and go to safe mode and delete service pack 3. sp3 is known for problems

most bios updates are found on the compaq website, they need to usually uncompress to a 3.5 floppy or they are auto-installing programs u get from the website, your issue however sounds to me more like a corrupted version of windows, did you try a fresh installation with the recovery cds or master disks?

your problem may be due to so many reason you have to check your ram the check your hard drive then you disconnect your optical drive, you have to do it one after one and see which is giving problem, if still you have problem plz post for futher assistance.

Its prob either yor ram or hard drive faulty. Download memtest and test ram 1st as thats the most likely cause. Check that optimised defaults are loaded in bios also.
