Auto focus does not work in the creative zone

(Canon EOS 350 D) When taking a shot using any of the options in the creative zone, the auto focus will not operate and the AE indicater (*) appears at all times through the view finder while the shutter button is pressed. If I press the AE lock button the auto focus will work while half pressing the shutter button. Maybe I'm missing out on something simple on this, but any possible solutions would be appreciated. Paul.

I've tried every which way I can to get my camera to do this, but my AE lock button is a one-off affair. I don't understand how it can be permanently on.

Do you have another lens you could try to see if it is a lens issue?

Sounds like your custom functions have been changed to work this way. On the EOS 350 D it is Custom Function #04. To change it back to default you need navigate through Canon's menus. Here's how to get there: while in one of the creative zones go to your camera menu and navigate to the 5th tab on the right. Select “Custom Functions (C. Fn)” from this tab. This will open a submenu of numbered options. Select #04 and set it to 0: the default AF/AE lock on a half depress of the shutter. That should get your camera back to the expected auto focus with the shutter button.
Happy shooting :-)

My autofocus on my canon 500d camera is not working properly. I find i have to switch to manual focus to take the pictures, even in all the atoumatic settings. I have only noticed this problem occurring in...

All auto focus cameras use contrast to focus so if you are attempting to focus on glass, chrome, blank sky, large body of water, painted wall, mirror, or any other low contrast subject the auto focus will fail. Another place auto focus will fail is when you are to close to your subject you my not be physically to close but have used the zoom to give a closer shot.

My canon eos 400d will not autofocus in creative settings.

Hey mate,

I've been having the same problem. It annoyed me during a day out once.

Set the camera in one of the Creative Modes.
-> Then go to Menu (the button on the left of the screen)
-> Setup 2 (thats the furthest menu on the right)
-> Custom Functions (3rd option down)
-> Go to function 4 and change it to "0: AF/AE LOCK"

Hope that helps mate :)

Cheers

Have a canon rebel eos and when I turn the camera on the only ting that shows up on the lcd is the auto description---how do I get it to just show what I want to take a photo of

These cameras won't show the picture on the screen until you've taken the photo, they don't work the same way as point and shoot cameras. So you have to use the viewfinder. Unless your model has live view in which case it's still pretty fiddly and I wouldn't recommend it.

How do you active the LCD screen on Canon EOS Rebel XS. I've read teh manual but still cannot active it. this is to review the shot before you take the shot.

In your manual it is on page 95, on how to do this,
It is called LIve view shooting and it does not work on basic zone modes.
1. Set camera to a creative zone mode
2. then under that tools option select live view function setting then press the set button
3 select live view shoot then hit set
4. press the menu button to exit

That is a custom function of the camera that can be change back to default with ease. While in one of the creative zones press the menu button and navigate to the 5th and final tab on the top right. 8f5da8f.jpg
This is the Setup menu 2. In this menu, select “Custom Functions (C. Fn)” . This will open a submenu of numbered options. Select #04 and set it to 0: the default AF/AE lock on a half depress of the shutter. 7528356.jpg

No AF point display indicator in Creative Zone modes.

In creative mode I would imagine that you are required to choose the focus point. Try the arrow buttons.

Canon AF Issues

Change from auto focus to manual focus or focus using only one focal square and change the setting to One Shot. You may need to shoot in Manual (M) mode though. Any of the "auto" modes will not let you.
