PVR locked in Standby with LED Display ''STARTING'' otherwise dead

Had this PVR model GUSTB250IV for 14 months & has worked fine. Suddenly, overnight, having been powered down at end of use, in the following morning the PVR is displaying this STARTING message. Never seen such a message before & don't know what it can relate to since this is not a normal message when you power up the PVR - the time usually shows when in standby. Am suspicious that maybe an overnight crashed software upgrade might be behind this but Grundig Technical Support say they don't hold info about s/w upgrades over the aerial!

Tech support only advises things I have tried like unplugging all, switching cables etc. No difference.

PVR does not have any reset button and of course because PVR is in standby, you can't get to menus on TV to restore to factory settings etc. I have tried holding down power switch on the front of PVR when powering up at mains (to force a reset?) but this does not work.

Any ideas as to how I can get this PVR to power up? If it is useless, I haver lost all my stored library of recordings too.

At a loss as to what to do - no local repairers able to deal with this technology and Grundig won't as it is (just) outside of warranty!

Pvr's generally just record to a hard drive if you are lucky you may be able to remove the drive and connect it to a computer and retrieve your videos (format permissive of course).

The fact that it hangs on starting suggests that perhaps it has failed to initialize software on the device.

if you are lucky there may be a way to reload the factory firmware onto the device but i am yet to see one that has been done with success.

I believe these Sony TV's have a built in obsolesence and Sony does not care about fixing them. I don't think a 7-year old TV is an "old model". Who can afford to by an expensive TV every 7 years. Shame on Sony.

I assume you have fixed this by now, but if not, call panasonic's help line (number is in your owner's manual). They will walk you through the complete reset process (maybe 5 minutes). you will have to re-program everything the same as you did when it first came out of the box, but that doesn't take too long. Also, first try taking the batteries out of the remote. Make sure they are still good. Wait 60 seconds or longer, then replace batteries.

SOURCE: TV won't turn on

The set is in protective shutdown because a problem was detected. The 5 blink code indicates that the problem circuit. In this case it is the blanking circuit. Were there any indications of problems prior to the storm? If not, I'll need to lok up this one for the specifics. Do you intend to repair this yourself?

Let me know and I'll provide the details.
Thanks,
Dan

Hitachi L32HK04UL. Standby LED flashes, but otherwise dead.

How many times this standby/power light blinks at one time switch ON? Count it carefully. These blinks are fault indication, and known as blinking codes. From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON; you can get an idea about the faulty circuit stage inside the TV. This will make repair easy. If you wish to get more details, check this link. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ Selecting the view option, either to Mosaic / Flip card, can be selected by the drop-down list, by the top left of the display window, will make surf easy. You can also do a search, by type in the brand name / model number / IC used, in the search box at the top right of the display window.

Those blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit section inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power LED, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. It has details about blinking codes, and fault locating procedure, to many popular brand TVs and other devices.

If blinks continue without any pause, the main board is faulty.

KDL 32S5500 TV When left on standby overnight locks-up, hangs.

There is a Post on the Sony Support site which I hadn't previously found. Basically there is a software bug which has come about apparently due to Freeview transmission changes. In order to stop the the machine locking up disable the 'Automatic System Update' option. A Sony centre will apparently apply a software fix to properly resolve the issue, fine if with warranty period, maybe pricey if not. I will get the fix but haven't yet done so as the workaround of disabling the System Update option works.

I have the Onkyo 706 with remote RC-717M. My remote just suddenly started to malfunction. The volume up is turning it down and vice versa. The power button to shut the receiver off is doing the function...

Have you tried resetting the remote? According to the manual (page 101), press and hold the RECEIVER button, press the AUDIO button, wait approx 3 sec. until RECEIVER highlights and finally press RECEIVER again. Of course if you've programmed a remote control code for your PVR in the RC-717M, you'll have to do it again.
