Are you typing on your laptop and notice the text has become illegible? What should be letters, have become numbers or symbols. This odd behavior can probably be explained be peering a little closer at your keyboard. Those little numbers on the keys. These numbers and symbols normally become active when you hold down the function key, usually labeled as the "FN" key. The "FN" key is similar to the Shift key, activating a second function assigned to a key. It can become active seemingly on it's own because a key is locked in the on position.

Before performing numerous key combinations, try the simple thing of lightly tapping the "FN" or "Num Lock" 5 to 6 times. There may be a small particle of something logged under the key that you can loosen, move, or crush down. Do not bang the keys, just press normally. Next focus on the "Numlock" key which usually located with the "Print Screen" and "Pause" key on the top right of your keyboard. Press the "Numlock" key, then press a scrambled key to see if it's normal. Older model laptops may require you hold down at the same time, the "Ctrl-Shift-Numlock" keys. Newer models may require holding down the "Shift" key and pressing the "Numlock" key. Turn off the Function key with the following combinations. Hold down the "FN" key and hit the "Numlock", Hold down the "FN" key and hit the "Scroll" key and Hold down at the same time "Fn+F12+Num Lock"

We the experts here at FixYa aren't that much expert to read the jumbled words. Well, it seems like you are having trouble writing with the keyboard, or keypad you are using. Well, try changing the keyboard/ keyboard port, and in case of Laptop, remove the keypad, by opening the keypad screws front the base, open the keypad strip and re-insert it after cleaning it with some cleaning liquid used for electronics like CTC, or WD40. If the problem still persists, that the keypad/ keyboard needs to be physically examined.

Concerned.

My son hit a few keys and now the are all jumbled. I hit a "P" and get the "*", an "L" gives me "2". How do I fix this?

Sounds like a spill on the keyboard to be honest, but assuming that its a result of your son hitting the keyboard there may be a key stuck down somewhere.
get a knife and ensure all keys are restored back to the up position.by lightly lifting them one by one.

Spilled some soup in my spacebar then i took it out after i put it back all letters are jumbled. i got acer aspire 1 notebook. help pls!

The keyboard is faulty and has electrical faults that is causing the jumbled letters.
To test the laptop is functioning correctly connect an USB keyboard to your laptop and check to see if the USB keyboard types correctly. If not then the laptop has a serious fault and possibly needs a new motherboard.
If the USB keyboard works OK the you need to replace the laptop's faulty keyboard.
You may be able to get a replacement keyboard from this WEB site.

Jumbled numbers and text

Look for the numlock light somewhere near the keyboard. It's the light with a drawing of a lock with a 9.

If it's lit up. turn it off by pressing the numlock key.

Turning it back on will activate the number keypad (consists of 9-11 keys in the middle of the keyboard). So instead of getting letters, numbers appear.

Hope this is your case. Kindly rate me if the issue got fixed.

Keyboard problems

It's your numlock that's on. It's for using your laptop as an adding machine like function. Do you see that certain letters also have numbrs on yr keyboard. Do you also see that theres the word numlock on one key. That's the key for turning on numlock ( in conjunction with the function key) so you can use those keys as an adding machine. Usually to turn numlock off and on you hold one finger on the function key and toggle the numlock key to turn it on and off. Consult your toshiba user guide for your particular model.
