I bought a new screen for my sony vaio because mine got cracked. My nephew put the new one on for me but no backlight. we could see the screen in the background so I hooked it to an external monitor and it works fine like that but I really want it to work the way its suppose to. Any ideas what the problem could be? My nephew said it is probably the motherboard. I just don't want to replace it if I don't have to. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

I couldn?t find disassembly instructions for your CRT; however, I can give you some safety warnings and some general hints. If no one else posts at mine will either discourage you OR give you enough to start. First off CRTs are dangerous, taking one apart without the proper training and precautions can kill or severely injure you. If you don?t already have the training and experience discharging the stored energy in the monitor you should not attempt it even if you have ?instructions?. If you decided to continue on then there are typically four screws holding the back of the monitor case to the front panel. On some higher end Sony?s they are covered with a plastic cover that you can easily pry off with a screwdriver. Once you have them out then the back cover can be removed, exposing the tube and remainder of the electronics. Again a warning, unless you know what you are doing you run the risk of severe electric shock and should not proceed. Usually there are a series of screws that attach the chassis to the front panel, remove them, the panel electronic connections and the disassembly should be done.
No I do not think that model has an external video connection.

You may either have bad caps or failed lamps assembly, see example here: http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/Sony%20SDM-HS73/
