You should be able to find out how to correctly update it in the manual. You didn't specify exactly which 430 model you had, but here are the links to each of them. Hope this helps you out.

SOURCE: Updates

You can update the unit's firmware for free. Go to www.garmin.com, and dowload the Web Updater software. This will check your unit's firmware (and some other software features) against Garmin's website and let you know if there are updates available. If so, you can download them for free. If you need to update your MAPS, these updates are available for purchase from Garmin. Go to the website and click on the C330. Then click on Maps. It will let you know what is available, and what it will cost you.95174195

tip

How to update your Garmin Satnav maps

To update your garmin satnav map you must have your satnav registered. If it's already registered skip to paragraph 2 below.

1. To Register your Garmin Satnav
  • Connecty our satnav to your computer and go to www.garmin.com
  • Select your country
  • Click on Register your garmin product
  • Follow the prompts
Note you will be asked to create a username and password. Write them down and keep them safe as you'll need them again anytime you want to update your maps

2. To update your maps

  • Connect your satnav to your computer and go to www.garmin.com
  • Click on myGarmin and log in
  • Click on myMaps.
  • If there's an update available it will be shown beside the name of your map.
  • Click on Get Update and follow the prompts.
Note map files are large so you'll need a broadband connection to download them. If you don't have broadband you'll have an option to buy the update on DVD.

  1. If The Map Is Too Large To Install To Your Satnav
When you go to download the map by default it tries to download it to the satnav i.e. not the SD/Mini SD card. You need to change this. When the website recognises the satnav follow the prompts. It will give you 3 options for the download destination.
    • Download to satnav,
    • Download to Computer and Satnav or
    • Download to computer.
As the website is updated, from time to time, the method of selecting the download destination changes. Sometimes it shows up as a drop box with a drop-down arrow showing your satnav name. Click the drop-down arrow and select the option to download the map to your computer. Sometimes it shows the 3 options as text headings with tick boxes beside them and you get to tick the option you want. Whichever way it shows up select the option to download the map to your computer. This will install it on your computer's hard drive.

  2. After it's downloaded the map should begin to install automatically. (If not double click on it and it will). It should be allowed to install to your satnav first as Garmin will not allow it to install to your SD/Mini SD card unless it's first partly installed to the satnav. This is so they can ensure that it's installed to the correct satnav.

  3. To Install The Full Map To Your SD/Mini SD Card
To install the map to your SD/Mini SD card, insert the card into the card slot of your satnav and connect it to the computer. Click the windows start button on your computer. Then click the GARMIN progam and then MAPINSTALL. This runs the map installation program. When the install program finds your satnav and you get the option to install the map there again by default. Click on the drop-down arrow, where it shows your satnav as the destination, and select the drive letter of the SD/Mini SD card. This will be different to the drive letter for your satnav. The map will then be installed to your SD/Mini SD card.

  4. Problems With Older Nuvi Satnavs Reading Maps On 4 Gb Or Higher SD Cards
When you install a map to an SD card older nuvi satnavs can have difficulty getting the satnav to read it. It will install to it without problem but when you try to operate the satnav then it cannot load the map and will close down the satnav unless you remove the SD card. The reason for this is that 4 Gb and higher cards are SDHC which operate differently from SD. To solve this problem you should use a class 2 SDHC card, which is the slowest type available. You can identify the class by the small figure on the card. It will be either 2, 4, 6, 8, or 10. Before you install the map format the card as described below. Also use webinstaller to check that you have the latest version of operating software on your satnav.

  5. Format the SD card with "Panasonic SD Formatter" available from http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/sd_formatter20.html rather than the standard windows format function. Select the fast format option and be sure you have selected the drive letter of your SDHC card as it will format your hard drive or indeed your satnav just as easily if you select one of them by mistake.

  6. To update your software or check that you have the latest version, you can download webupdater from http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-27
Connect your satnav to the computer and run the program. It will search for any updates to your software.
Class 2 SDHC cards are harder to find in shops today as they are being replaced by the faster classes. They are however still easily available on ebay if you can't find one in the shops.

Bought a garmin second hand already registered so I can't download from Garmin site How do I get maps for America

You need to either get the previous owner to remove the satnav from their site or give you the log in details. To remove it from the previous owner's site;
  • They need to log in to myGarmin
  • Click on the "myProducts" tab at the top of the screen
  • The name of the satnav (i.e. nuvi 255W) will be shown here and under it in blue writing the word "Details"
  • Click on "Details"
  • On the next screen click on "Delete Registration"
Once it's deleted you should be able to register it under your own name. If you don't know the previous owner or can't contact them I'm afraid it won't be possible to update it.

I just purchased a Garmin NUVI 3750 GPS from JB HI FI and was told I was intitled to a life time map guarantee with three map downloads a year. I have proof of purchase and need to know where I register...

To register;

  • Connect your satnav to your computer
  • Go to www.garmin.com
  • Select your country from the drop-down list
  • Click on the "myGarmin" tab at the top of the page
  • Click on "Register your garmin product"
  • Click on "Automotive" and follow the prompts
You'll be asked to create a username and password. Keep them safe as you'll need them to update your maps.

It's unusual to get a lifetime update for maps with a garmin satnav. This may be a special offer from the dealer but I would be suspicious. To check for updates after you have registered

  • Go to www.garmin.com
  • Click on the myGarmin tab and log in using your username and password
  • Click on the "myMaps" tab at the top of the page.
The maps on your satnav should be shown here. If there's an update available it will be shown beside it. (otherwise it will say "no update available") If there's an update available click on the "UPDATE AVAILABLE" link and follow the prompts. You'll soon find out if they want money of if you have a lifetime update.

Why if you buy a garmin at game you have to pay R500 at trapers to up date it for you is there no way that i can update it on the internet i feel if you buy it that the soft ware much be corect and not...

If you bought the satnav new then you should be entitled to a free update from www.garmin.com. Garmin claim that if a new map comes out within 60 days of the first time your satnav acquires a satellite connection you can update it free from their website. Details on how to register and update your satnav can be found at http://www.fixya.com/support/r5628920-update_garmin_satnav_maps

Note: When you register the satnav log in to myGarmin and click on myMaps. The map on your satnav should be shown. If there's an update available it will be shown beside the map name. When you click on GET UPDATE it will let you know if it's free or has to be paid for.

Can i reinstall map updates without having to pay for it again

1. If you downloaded the map updates from the garmin website you can download them again free if you need to. However if you downloaded them to your computer you may not need to download them again. Connect your satnav to your computer. On your computer click START, then click GARMIN and then MAPINSTALL. If all these are on your computer the map is probably there and will install to your satnav.

2. If it's not on your computer go to www.garmin.com and log into myGarmin. Click on myMaps. You will see the name of the map you downloaded previously and under the word DETAILS.
Click on DETAILS and it will bring you to a page where you have the option to download it again. When you're setting up the download and it says download to your satnav if you click on the dropdown arrow you get the option to install it to your computer, you computer and satnav or just your satnav. If you want to install it to your computer so you can reinstall it to your satnav in future or if it all won't fit on your satnav you can select to download to your computer. When it's downloaded it should automatically give you the option of installing to your satnav. Click yes to install. If it doesn't then follow the details in paragraph 1 above to install it.

Reset navman F10 sat nav

Press and hold the on/off button for ten seconds will re-set the system on the satnav. If the screen freezes after loading the maps then connect the Satnav to a pc via a usb lead and download the latest Service update fom Navman.com. With the Satnav connected to the computer and the download compleated double-click the F10 set-up.Exe and it will update the system on the Satnav. Once complete disconnect the cable and restart the F10. That was the way I sorted mine out after recieving 'little' help from Tech Support from Navman.com. My problem seems to be in the Multi-drop ability of the F10 [program one location and try and add another to plan a route] but I have never got anyhelp from the tech's other than "Buy a Connectivity kit from us and you may be able to use that to fix the problem....". If you get a "Not enough memory to complete update... " message after double clicking the F10 set-up, you will need to go into your F10 Satnav memory and look up some of the saved files from previous routes you have stored in there. I deleated some of these to free memory and it didn't seem to affect the Satnav's programming and allowed the update to complete. My F10 started fine after that. If you need any more help, Navman.com tech support may be able to suggest something....., just don't hold your breath....
