Burning smell and smoke

I have a Maytag HAV2357AWW when my clothes went into spin cycle it begin smoke and there was a burning smell. I notice this after trying to fix the off balance problem I was having with the load.

    our machine does"nt rinse or spin we have changed the belt
    and no cold water comes either
    please let me know what I can do thank you

    The washing machine just stopped and I went in to check on it and smoke came out of the tub - could it the the motor and how expensive is the motor?

Sounds like the belt has burnt off. You can check this by tilting the machine back and looking under it. Sometimes the belt gets hard and just starts to slip, then it will smoke and burn off. If this is the case, Just replace the belt and this will fix it.

if you have a maytag neptune washer that ran up until now you got your money's worth,that's the machine that put maytag out of business,if it's smoking and ripping the boot it sounds like the tub bearing is gone and you'll have to replace the washer,if it's load in the spin like marbles are rolling around in it that's the problem,but i wouldn't put a cent into that machine.

Won't spin on spin cycle, smells of something burning.
sounds like the belt or the tub bearings are shot. It is likely that the motor is spinning and the tub is not, causing the belt to burn.

Maytag Atlantis shut down during rinse cycle.
Contacted a local repair shop. They told me that if I got it spinning again, the motor was most likely ok. It is protected by a thermal switch that turns it off when it begins to overheat. The smell was to be expected as it was overheating; the difficutly restarting was because it hadn't cooled off enough yet. We have now used it a few times for small loads. Still getting a smell, but the wash cycle is completing ok.
