Some vacuums have a reset button you can push. Some have a fuse in the power line that may have blown. You will have to follow the power all the way through the vacuum checking the voltage at each switch, connection, etc. I often unhook the power & neutral wires from the motor and hook up a power cord with connectors on the end directly to the motor to make sure the motor is good. You must be very knowledgable with motors, switches, electrical testing, etc. If not this repair is best left to a professional.
You probably need to take that in and have it serviced at a repair shop. They can check the motor to see if it needs to be replaced or just cleaned. The noise could be bad bearings or a fan problem as well.
Hi Ross, sorry for this delay, but the email does not seem to be working, I will get on this as soon as I can and will efinatly have something for you shortly, been one of those days and I am not catching up yet.
Storing a chain saw for longer than 30 days requires storage maintenance. Unless the storage instructions are followed, fuel remaining in the carburetor will evaporate, leaving gum-like deposits. This could lead to difficult starting and result in costly repairs. Never store a chain saw for longer than 30 days without performing the following procedures:
Remove the fuel tank cap slowly to release any pressure in tank. Carefullydrain the fuel tank.Start the engine and let it run until the unit stops to remove fuel from carburetor. Allow the engine to cool (approximately 5 minutes). Using a spark plug wrench, remove the spark plug.
Pour 1 teaspoon of clean 2-cycle oil into the combustion chamber. Pull starter rope slowly several times to coat internal components. Replace spark plug.
Store the unit in a dry place and away from possible sources of ignition such as a furnace, gas hot water heater, gas dryer, etc. When removing the unit from storage, be sure to perform the following procedures:Remove spark plug. Pull starter rope briskly to clear excess oil from combustion chamber.Clean and gap spark plug or install a new spark plug with proper gap.Prepare unit for operation.Fill fuel tank with proper fuel/oil mixture. This will help. Thanks, please keep updated. please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya
Have you considered a rental? Home Depot rents Makitas (Dolmar) with a 20" bar reasonably. Be warned running a Dolmar/Makita will make you question the value of your Poulan LOL. HTH

Dyson company is aware of switch failures in their vacuums. It is a engineering flaw and even if your Dyson is no longer within the warranty period, call them and they may replace the switch for you for free. Do not use the vacuum!!! You can shock yourself or start an electrical fire.
http://geeksquad.fixya.com/ThreadView.aspx?prdid=0&thid=830037 Generic problem for all Vacuums We have a dirt devil Posted by smilingreb on July 24, 2008 We have a dirt devil cylinder vacuum cleaner with bag and when we plugged it in tonight it made a loud noise and a horrible smell came out of it. We could also see some blue sparks inside it. I was wondering of you could help? Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Yes, what you described is that your vacuum cleaner motor is going out and will burn up, you have 2 choices, you can either get it repaired of which would be the least expensive of the tow or you can buy a new vacuum and trade-in the old one – but it would be up to you as per which total would work for you. If you bring in to a vacuum cleaner dealer, request an estimate up front to help you in your decision, some motors can be rebuilt. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions. http://royalvacuums.com/Customer Service 1-800-321-1134 Hours are: 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM(EST) Thanks, Don the Vac Man Go Ahead.
