Most Hyper modules are no longer available from Toshiba.
Hyper modules go bad due to problems in the power supply.
Which also needs attention.
We have developed a method of repairing the modules.
We are a Toshiba dealer in Milwaukee.
Note: What you read on the Internet is only a guess. You guess at you own expense and risk.
A dealer assumes that risk for you and provides a warranty.

It sounds like a typical problem with your Hypermodule. It will make the video distorted or ziz zag shapped in most cases.

If you are a decent do it yourselfer you can get a rebuild kit from www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kit that includes all the parts and detailed step by tep photo instructions.

Wavy Lines showing only on with DVD player

this is a common problem i see at the shop it involves what is known as the hypermodule. there is a group of 11 capacitor.. these are surface mounted and very small and difficult to replace. in an ideal situation replaceing the hypermodule would be best.. but if if understand right this is no longer availble. 2nd option is sending the board in and leting a technician replace caps..3 and most difficult is replaceing the caps yourself.. i do not recomend this...i would recomend 1 and 2

Toshiba 50H72

The Hyper Module Is Defective / It Is Located Behind The Jack Panel On The Signal Board.
More specifically the 11 16v/10mf caps on that board need to be replaced... Not expensive, I do them for under $100.00 dollars..

Wavy Screen on Startup

I gather from your post that wavy can mean two possible things as the TV comes on, you see the picture flow like ocean waves? In this case you may have 60Hz hum modulating with the picture, this is actually unlikely these days, but I have heard it happens sometimes. The other thing it could be is light horizontal tearing. This happens when the horizontal frequency is too high or too low. You are not going to like my solution because I feel that for problems like this the set must be analyzed not just subjected to "shotgun troubleshooting", so here I go, Take the TV to a repair shop.
