This sounds like a common image sensor failure. Unfortunately Canon stopped fixing this problem over a year ago. Parts are NLA.

Your camera has a stuck shutter. Canon will not fix this for free. There is a guy on eBay that fix this issue for a low price. Fix is for Canon S2, S3, S5 with stuck shutter. here is the link in case you need: http://www.ebay.com/itm/141414188140

The CCD is dead or the lens shutter doesn't open. You have to contact your local Canon service center.

Hope this helps!

First try pressing the "DISP" button. If that doesn't work, try downloading a picture. Is the picture also black? If so, it's probably a defective CCD imager. Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

Hi

The Digital Rebel XTi doesn't have 'live view' mode, you can't see what you're taking a picture of before you take the picture.

SOURCE: Canon S3 no display on LCD screen

for the person whose screen is blank but the photos work- I had the same problem and solved it by replacing the smaller date/time battery which slides out of the larger battery copartment. The battery is a CR1220 smaller than a dime and even flatter. Hope this works for you.

The connection from ccd to camera has failed, probably due to dry joint, Canon dont own up to this, so it s shell out about £140 for a repair or chuck it in the bin!!!

LCD not working on Canon S3IS

When you press the DISP button the screen will light up. But there is a power save function that will turn the screen off after 1 minute. This value can be changed if you press MENU, select the tools tab and then look under Power Saving. Check what this is currently set to, it may have been changed to be less than a minute. You can make the time period longer.
