No sound when playing DVD

This is the 2nd laptop in 2 days with the exact same fault.
All other sound systems work just not with any DVD. Says Error - Audio format is not supported by the current application. Please launch %s in MCE.
Tried with pre-recorded and home made DVD.
CD's and memory cards all produce sound - please help!!!!! I have the exact same problem. I have an acer 5735 laptop with windows vista basic built in. Everything is fine until I try to play my wedding DVD which is Home made. The picture is perfect but I get no sound and this message

error
audio format is not supported by current application.please launch %s in MCE

Someone said I need to pay and upgrade to vista premium but this seems a little unfair as it isn't cheap.

I had XP on my PC and everything worked.

Thanks will try tomorrow but have also found that the acer has an arcade inbuilt, I thought this was for games but seems to also play the DVD, doesn't have many features but plays ok, and with sound.

Aspire 5515 dvd wont play sound

Does the laptop play CDs?
If so then when you start a DVD and before you play the movie, go into the audio setting and configure the speakers for laptop stereo speakers.
If you cannot hear music from the CD then check :-
1. The audio settings, volume not set to minimum and mute is not ticked (enabled)
2. Device manager - sound device is enabled and working, if not re-install the sound driver.

Install K-lite codec pack. Or some recommend VLC player. Your missing codec.

No sound when playing DVD

Here is a simple way to find out if it is the program that you are using or actually your computer. What I am going to do is list a link at the bottom for you to install and try and watch your movies on. This is called VLC it is a movie player with a bunch of different codec's. You can think of a codec as a way to translate the designed language of the movie into audio and video. Different movies are written in different ways and not all programs have all of the correct codecs. But anyway VLC is jammed packed full of codecs. I use it personally, never had a issue it works amazing. This is my quickest and easiest solution.

DVD player not working properly

I have a DVD player, a VCR player, a TV set all hook into an RCA RT2250 Audio/Video receiver. Everything was working fine until 2 days ago. Now the DVD player gives me a great pix but no sound. The VCR,and TV are just fine and I have checked everything out, speaker connections, mute buttons, etc. and nothing seems to be wrong. I am thinking that some thing in the receiver got fried. Is it repairable?
