This also sometimes happens when tv is already on. tv suddenly goes blank & then red light flashes six times
Power off the television. Wait a few minutes, then power it back on. If this does not correct the issue leave the power on, point your remote control towards the Sony television and hold the down arrow button. While holding the down arrow button press the "Power" button. Release the down arrow button and the Sony TV will reset itself to factory settings. Once the television performs a scan on itself your problem should be gone.

Sounds like a power supply issue. order a new power supply or trouble-shoot the current. Look for any capacitors that are bulged up on the top and not flat.

Above is your service and repair manual for download.
What is happening is there is an internal "Fault" that is causing the Protection Circuitry , to detect the problem, and attempt to shut down the set. When we keep restarting the set, it may work briefly again, because as soon as it shuts down, the "Faulty" component(s) cool down?, and the "Fault" ostensibly "Clears" so the PSU starts up again, only for the component(s) to heat up, whatever, again and fail, so it shuts down, and if left unattended, this would continue on until the part eventually failed. Any fault that involves the power supply is usually quite serious, and needs a professional, usually, unless one is familiar with servicing current day, televisions.
my professional recommendation, you should get a "Quote" for repair, from, an, Approved Service Center. Now, this point is very important for a good result, Always contact, their "Local" or a, "Head Office" Sony, in your case. Ask them, for a referral to an authorised servicing center, where you ask for a "Quote". Now, when you get the information you want, then you can decide as to repair of replacement.
The reason we want an approved agent, is that way, all the engineers are trained on their own brand sets, they have seen almost all faults, and will get the job done quicker, and for less cost, and usually have parts on hand, also sometimes, there has been a service bulletin in issued and the repair may be subsided or even free. There are many, many, many reasons that display this symptom, one must work through the troubleshooting steps to isolate and identify, the Cause and repair that and any damage done.

Hello,
This issue
is related to a power problem in as much as the TV turns off on it's
own. I think the TV has developed a power problem.
The problem is consistent with overheating on the power supply board of the TV.
The
power supply board of the TV has few capacitors and IC. If any of these
IC's gets short or become weak, it can cause the TV to turn off on it's
own.
When current passes from electric outlet to the power
supply board of TV. The current also goes to the weak/faulty part, then
the current stops or slow and the board overheats and TV shuts off on
it's own.
This problem may have occurred as a result of irregular power supply, or excess power supply or power surge.
This
is a common problem faced by many other users too. To solve this issue,
check the power supply board and read it with a meter and continuity
tester, in order to detect the faulty part and replace the faulty part
on the board which is short due to which power supply board.
Sony specifically uses GM1 Board. In other words, Sony power supply board is called "GM1 board"
It's a bit technical job but yes its not at all a costly repair to do or get it done by the technician.
You
can buy this part at any Fry's or Radioshack store or you can order
them online at vendors like "mcmelectronics.com"(look for electrolytic
capacitors). After replacing these capacitor (capacitors) most likely
the normal operation will be restored. Or you can buy a refurbished
complete GM1 power board from shopjimmy.com to save you some stress.
If
this task is too technical for you, you can call a family or friend who
has the ability to assist you (two heads are better than one).
