Cassette tape spins fast

I have an Onkyo dual tape deck (TA-RW400), 20 years old.
When a tape is inserted in either unit and play is pushed, the head does not move up to the tape and the motor spins as if fast forward. happens in forward or reverse play. If i manually move the head up, tape speed is still fast.

It is strage that the same mechanical problem would appear in both units at the same time, perhaps the play buttons are sending improper signals.

Anyone experience this. I am trying to move my tapes to MP3. is it worth messing with this old deck?

thanks

Hi Chris..

It's not worth repairing. I would find something else in good condition

TA-RW255 DUAL CASSETTE DECK

Have you check and make sure that the belts are working well?
Is the pinch roller working (spinning)?
A worn out belt will make the mechanism not to operate properly resulting in shutdown to avoid damage to the tapes.

I have a onkyo cassette tape deck ta 2600,when you push play on the cassette,it would play the tape for half of a second and stop

Sounds like the cassette tape itself is too tight to play, try fast forwarding or rewinding the tape in the deck all the way to the end of tape several times before trying to play. This may solve the problem

Onkyo TA-207 3-head cassette deck

The gearing and rubber parts involved in FF or REW vs. play are different. This unit should be overhauled and all of the rubber parts replaced.

Cassette Recorder play problem

Sounds like the tape tension sensor is stuck. The sensor is always telling the mechanism that the tape has reached the end.
