Tilt the battery chamber cover by some 45 degrees, and then just snap gently to pull out

Can I get user manual for Nikon MB-40 multi-power battery pack for F6 body?

I think the extent of the instructions is on the Nikon USA web site. Here it is

"The Nikon MB-40 Multi-Power Battery Pack accommodates eight AA (alkaline, lithium, or Ni-MH) batteries, or the Nikon EN-EL4 Rechargeable Li-ion Battery. The MS-40 Battery Holder comes with the MB-40. With the MB-40 attached, film can be advanced as fast as 8 fps.
When using the EN-EL4 battery, the Battery-Chamber Cover BL-3 must be used.
The MB-40 is also a vertical grip, and features a vertical grip shutter release, an AF start button, and Multi-selector and Command Dials for more comfortable and responsive shooting."

How to charge a nikon 40dx

Assuming you mean a Nikon D40x, the answer is: you don't.
Remove the EN-EL9 battery pack from the camera and insert it into the MH-23 charger or equivalent and plug the charger into a wall outlet.
If you need a charger, you may order one here. Alternatively you may order a third-party charger here.

My wife has a Nikon D40 DSLR. The battery door will not stay closed. If she gets an external grip does the innternal battery still need to be accessed by the camera or will this solve the problem of not...

The external grip will hold one or two battery pack(s). It slides into the battery well, replacing the battery and the door. If the problem is with the door itself and not with the body, getting the external should fix that problem.

the meter should turn on as soon as you half press the shutter. otherwise remove the lens and try cleaning the electrical contacts on the lens and on the camera body.use q-tips dipped in very light spirits of alcohol, make sure you dont leave any debris around the area. caution with the camera's sensor.

No autofocus

We tried the same lens on another Nikon (D90) and auto focus did not work.
We mounted a new set of lens on the original D40x, and it worked.
Turns out the 2 year Nikon lens (18mm-135mm) was bad. Nikon lens have a 5 year warrantee. The lens will be sent back to Nikon with no service or shipping charge.

Thanks,
K
