Assuming you mean a Nikon D40x, the answer is: you don't. Remove the EN-EL9 battery pack from the camera and insert it into the MH-23 charger or equivalent and plug the charger into a wall outlet. If you need a charger, you may order one here. Alternatively you may order a third-party charger here.
The external grip will hold one or two battery pack(s). It slides into the battery well, replacing the battery and the door. If the problem is with the door itself and not with the body, getting the external should fix that problem.

It is hard to say which is 'best' - it depends what you want. Some have built in timers, some take 3 batteries for long shooting, some have portrait mode shutter releases...
Define 'best'.
the meter should turn on as soon as you half press the shutter. otherwise remove the lens and try cleaning the electrical contacts on the lens and on the camera body.use q-tips dipped in very light spirits of alcohol, make sure you dont leave any debris around the area. caution with the camera's sensor.
We tried the same lens on another Nikon (D90) and auto focus did not work.
We mounted a new set of lens on the original D40x, and it worked.
Turns out the 2 year Nikon lens (18mm-135mm) was bad. Nikon lens have a 5 year warrantee. The lens will be sent back to Nikon with no service or shipping charge.
