GE Profile XL1800 light out and fan starts running when door is closed

The light is out and the fan starts running when I close the door - I can still cook food but would have to leave the door open at all times to stop the fan from running. Should I just replace it??

It is not the fault with the fan but the trigger to the fan is shorted. It can be the DOOR SWITCH or the Transistor switch from the board. A fault or error on the processor cannot be ruled out. Clean the main board and reset.

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch or a loose door switch mount, which are pretty simple problems to fix.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside.

Door switch or mount trouble is usually caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.

Sometimes it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. This tab can be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.

If the switch mount is broken, it's usually more economical and safer to add a dab or two of hot glue to the mount to secure the switch. Let it cool for about 30 minutes before using.

One test that sometimes helps is to gently lift up (and/or push down) on the door or handle as you try to start it. If it works or tries to work, then it's a door switch mount or door alignment issue.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

If you only need a switch, you can order a universal type here for $5 postpaid.

SOURCE: ge xl1800 microwave door close

That's usually a defective upper or lower door switch (or either switch's mount may be bad) or a stuck relay or bad electrolytic on the control circuit board.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Our file on door switches is here.

After you or a friend look that over, if you still have a problem, we repair these control boards for $39.95 with a one-year guarantee.

Instead of having yours repaired, you can buy a new control circuit board from the Pros here, our favorite supplier.

If it goes dead or blows the breaker or GFI when you plug it in or open or close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside. Its continuity must be checked.

A simple test is to place a piece of bread in the microwave ( it heats up very fast) and then if your microwave was actually ON and generating RF, the bread would get hot very fast.. If it remains cool then only the fan is on. It appears that you may have a faulty door switch thou because once you open the door, your microwave should be off..

Are you sure the VENT is not on? That blower will operate regardless of the door open or closed so you must switch it OFF.

SOURCE: GE XL1800 Micro fan won't shut off after light burned out

The problem appears, at least in part, to the door latch circuitry which cannot be serviced by the owner. If the unit is still in warranty, call GE customer care. If not, replacing the unit is your best bet. I just bought a new GE 1100 watt oven with great features for less than $100 If the door dosen't latch correctly, you could be exposed to dangerous microwave energy.

My ge spacemaker xl1800 light and fan turn on when door is opened. small piece of foil does not spark during this. is there an easy fix?

Kent, most microwaves will turn on the light when you open the door. As for the fan coming on, does it do that all of the time or only after you have used it for a period of time? If it does only after you have used it, you might want to check the back and the underneath of your microwave to see where the fan draws air into the unit and clean any lint built up on the vent holes. Hope this helps!

I'm betting your base model number is JVM1860, JVM1861, JVM1870, JVM1871, JVM3660, or JVM3670.
That's the automatic louver you're having trouble with. There are micro switches in the louver assembly which tell the controller when the louver is open or closed.
If one of those switches or the louver motor fails, the louver will not work correctly.

GE microwave won't turn off

Just checked the GE website. Had the same problem with my 5 year old microwave. GE website says to close and open the door quickly three times. First time I did this it didn't work. Second time I closed the door with some significant force and reopened it more quickly. Worked. Unplugged the microwave, plugged it back in, still fine.
