EMachines Recovery Discs

I have followed the instructions regarding the use of the recovery discs that came w/ my pc.When the system tries to reboot, an error appears that a problem has been detected and Windows had to shut down. Please check any newly installed hardware or software and run CHKDSK /F. I have tried a million different ways but cannot keep from getting this error. I cannot get into DOS to run the check disc, cannot get Windows to reboot at all. Also, the recovery process only takes about 15 minutes, so I've done it 3 times now.

Hi Sandysue, As I understand your problem, 1. The error could be caused by: memory, video, hardrive or drivers; 2. Windows by asking you to run CHKDSK /F has detected a possible problem with your harddrive; 3. It is possible that the reason you cannot go to DOS mode is because your harddrive is formatted in NTFS and not FAT332. There are a couple of ways on how to go about this but all would require that you have access to second PC: 1. Run a third party software (BartPE) that you will have to boot from your CD Drive or USB and run a disk checking utility; 2. Remove your hardrive and install it as a secondary master in the 2nd PC and run chkdsk or scandisk; 3. Remove your hardrive and install it in an external HD enclosure and connect using USB to the 2nd PC and run chkdsk or scandisk; 4. Remove your hardrive and install it either USB or as secondary master to the 2nd PC. Copy all your important files to the 2nd PC, and repartition/reformat. Reinstall to the eMachine and reinstall Windows. There is a possibility that even if you were able to run CHKDSK or Scandisk eventually your best bet would still be #4. If you have gained access to the inside of your eMachine PC, it would also be a good idea to remove/reinsert any cards and the memory stick(s). A little housekeeping would also be nice. I hope that this be of some help and pls post again how things turn up or if you need further information. Goodluck and kind regards.

Trying to restore back to factory settings

System Recovery
When you've tried other methods of repairing your
system software (like System Restore or Application
Recovery), you may want to use the Compaq System
Recovery program as a last resort to reinstall the software.
When necessary, you can reinstall the operating system and
the application software that was originally installed on the
PC at the factory by using the System Recovery program.
WARNING: The Compaq System Recovery
program will delete any data or programs
that you installed after purchase. Be sure to
back up any data that you want to keep onto
a removable disc.
The System Recovery program uses a special recovery
partition on the hard disk drive that stores an image of the
original software.
NOTE: The System Recovery image is in a partition area
of the hard disk drive and takes up part of the total drive
space. This disk space is not usually available for your use.
In the unlikely event that you replace the hard disk drive,
or somehow damage the data in the special recovery
partition on the hard disk drive, use recovery discs to
reinstall the operating system and software on the hard disk
drive. See "System Recovery Using Recovery Discs."
Make your own recovery discs (CDs or DVDs) before you
need them; see "Creating Recovery CDs/DVDs." You can
also make the Recovery Tools CD. This CD contains utilities
that allow you to make changes to your hard disk drive; see
"Using the Recovery Tools CD."
Starting System Recovery
if the PC Is Responding
1 Turn off the PC. Disconnect all peripheral devices from
the PC except the monitor, the keyboard, and the mouse.
Turn on the PC.
2 Click Start on the taskbar, choose All Programs,
choose PC Help & Tools, and then click Compaq
System Recovery.
3 Wait until the System Recovery window appears asking
Do you really want to start System Recovery?
4 Click Yes to continue with the recovery process. If you
created recovery discs, you may be directed to insert
recovery disc #1. If the Recovery disc is a DVD, be sure
to put the disc in a DVD drive.
5 The PC starts the recovery; wait for the onscreen
instructions to display, and then follow those instructions.
6 Complete the PC startup, finish the registration process,
and wait until you see the desktop. Then, turn off the PC,
reconnect all peripheral devices, and then turn on the PC.
Starting System Recovery if the PC
Is Not Responding
1 Turn off the PC. If necessary, press and hold the On
button until the PC turns off.
2 Disconnect all peripheral devices from the PC except the
monitor, the keyboard, and the mouse.
3 Press the On button to turn on the PC.
4 During the startup, do the following to enter the System
Recovery program:
When the black screen with the Compaq logo appears,
press the F10 key on the keyboard. (You have only a few
seconds to press the F10 key before the normal startup
process continues.)

It looks like you'll have to either return it or perform a default factory recovery. These instructions are from their site but proceed knowing that this will erase any data that is stored on the primary partition (meaning if you have anything on it, it's gone...). Esentially it resets it to a point as if you just picked it up in the store (which you did.. :( )

With user created backups you are able to restore your computer to the factory default settings. If backup discs were created instead of factory restore discs, these can be used instead and will restore the system to a user backup point.

I need to press a key on my keyboard to start factory recovery

Hi and welcome to Fixya!

In order to revert the machine back to its factory setting, you need to have the recovery disk (if you don't have it, call the warranty support line of e-machines so they can provide it to you).

To restore Windows from your recovery discs, you will need to
insert the first backup disc and enable the F12 Boot Menu via the BIOS Setup
Utility.
1 Turn on your computer and insert the first system recovery disc into the
optical disc drive. Restart your computer.
2 During startup when the eMachines logo shows, press the F2 key to enter
BIOS Setup, where you can set system parameters.
3 Use the left and right arrow keys to select the Main submenu.
4 Use the up and down arrow keys to select F12 Boot Menu.
5 Use the F5 or F6 key to change F12 Boot Menu to Enabled.
6 Press the ESC key to enter the Exit submenu, press the ENTER key to Exit
Saving Changes. Press the ENTER key again to select Yes. The system will
reboot.
7 After rebooting, when the eMachines logo shows, press the F12 key to
open the Boot Menu. Here you can select which device to boot from.
8 Use the arrow keys to select the IDE1*, then press the ENTER key. Windows
will be installed from the recovery disc.
9 Insert the second recovery disc when prompted, then follow the onscreen
prompts to complete the restore.
10 Remove the recovery disc from the optical drive once the restore is
complete. Do this before rebooting your computer.

Hope this helps!

    Accessing EMachines W3107 Recovery Partion

You can fix this virus without recovering.

Log in normally. Go to run, type in msconfig and go to the startup tab. Uncheck everything and reboot your pc. Once there try your internet. If it's not working go to Internet Options, Connections, Lan Settings, and uncheck anything in your proxy settings. Close IE and reopen. You should be able to connect. Then download and run Malwarebytes, and then run Bitdefender Online scanner.

The only other thing that may be trouble is that there may be a rootkit that neither scanner will detect. You can run Combofix, but this program isn't for the average user. Follow instructions carefully when using Combofix.
