Sounds like the magnetron circuit has failed. It is the part that generates the microwaves that heat the food. It often shorts out, and makes a loud humming or buzzing noise when it fails. It's not usually cost effect to replace since the part alone can cost as much as a new oven.
IF the noise is a sound coming from the oven area, its the megatron tube. Typically, replacing the megatron tube is more expensive than replacing wiht a new unit and a new warranty.
hello Frank. Sorry to tell you that the magnetron is going bad and making that terrible noise. Since the inside of a microwave, even unplugged has up to 2000 residual and deadly volts of electricity I recommend either calling a pro or replacing the unit.
yes anything can be fixed but a do it yourselfer i reccomend against this cause thats a radiated element in the micro
recommend go out and purchase a replacement go with G.E. they have the 7 year warranty great little micro. too change out is easy
Could the noise you are hearing be maybe an electical sparking/arcing noise? It could be that the wave guide cover inside the micromave cavity is dirty, and needs to be cleaned. If it is not, then it could be a bad magnetron crackling and going bad. If this is the case, it is likely going to damage the waveguide and render the microwave unrepairable. I wouldn't use it until you have it checked out or take it apart and check it out yourself. Hope this helps.
