Like most SLR's your camera has a latch mechanism that can be engaged to lock the mirror in the up position. The purpose of the mirror lock is to allow you to use some older lenses with short focal lengths that require the rear element to be so close to the film plane that they cannot be used with the mirror in a down position. I would start by identifying that "switch" and disengaging it. I do not have the manual for your camera, so I cannot tell you the exact location.

Saturn ION 2 rearview mirror is still fully attached but when you move mirror into a position it will not stay in that position.

Time to replace the mirror...the circulating ball must be jammed or worn out...At the bottom of the mirror head that attaches to the windshield is an allen screw head or small Phillips head...this must be loosened for the mirror assembly to pull off of the windshield...Best bet is to try your local salvage yard for a Saturn replacement..."Pic A Part" is a national yard...You should try working with an old mirror so you don't damage your current mounting...of course if the windshield magnet comes off, it can be re-attached with mirror adhesive glue...parts stores and auto dept at Walmart...Hope this helps.

I have malfunctioning electric-driven exterior towing mirrors on a 1999 ford f-350. How to diagnose/fix? Mirrors respond only to right adjust; no response on up/down or left adjust.

there is a separate motor for up/down and another for left/right adjust. The glass is serviceable but not the motors, built into the frame of the mirror body.

Hi jandklandry, Sounds as though the cushion the mirror hits on the up swing is tacky thus holding the mirror up. Maybe you can yourself fix it however, I would suggest sending it to Nikon for a complete CLA (Clean Lube Adjust). You have a nice camera allow Nikon to do it proud.

I have a Canon FTb. mirror locked up.

I have an FTbn 35mm you're talking right?
On mine there's a tiny lever near the lens that when turned, it locks the mirror up for lenses that are too long.
If that doesn't work, you can buy my FTbn. ;)

Your shutter leavers are getting slow. They will fail soon, most likely the old grease is sticking. You can get a replacement body for $40 as repairs/cleaning will be $80+

Mirror problems

Could be 1 of two things: 1. Mirror linkage failed. 2. Something is holding the mirror; sticky foam or the lubrication has dried out. Remove the lens, use slow shutter speed to release the shutter. While mirror is stuck in the up position, very gently pull down on the front edge of the mirror. If it frees up immediately it was stuck on the foam. Might be able to see a mark on edge of mirror from the foam. Hope this helps.
