You should be able to mute it in the sound mixer. That yellow speaker in the System Tray (double left click). Remember to select the Recording one from the top menu if necessary to pull up the sliders and mute buttons display.

External microphone thinkpad t41

Control Panel, Sounds, look at Recording devices (depends on the OS you are using, you didn't mention, Vista, XP, 7,8?), Mic. Your Headphones jack, when in use, will cause the internal sound to disable, depending on OS the mic setup is a bit different but you should find it in sounds, recording devices.

Microsoft Lifecam / Using a different microphone

Im not sure I understood exactly the issue but the solutions are more than one ...
you may just uninstall the web cam ...and set the mic you want to use and after that reinstall the web cam ...and you have every chances to be installed and the external mic to remain in use..
or ...to use the mic from the external pink entry of the pc ...just select it from the sound driver ...options..
in your capture program you might also have the choice for which mic to use ....
in your yahoo messenger for example you have this choice on preferences /audio device....
you also may find on your control panel ...sound and audio device /audio../and for the sound recording audio device ...select the one you want...
good luck !

Cannot get laptop microphone working

Double click on the little speaker icon on the Desktop toolbar at the bottom right of your screen. The volume control window will open. Click on options then properties. Next check the small round recording button. Now make sure he microphone box is checked then click ok. Now a window will open that will show your microphone recording level. Move the slider up about half way and make sure to check the small "Select" box near the bottom of the slider. Open up sound recorder or whatever application you are using and try to record. If this does not work I would get an external microphone plug it into your laptop and try recording again. If the external mic works then I would think that you internal microphone is not working. There are some very cheap external mics on the market that sound very good. If you are doing any serius recording you may want to invest in a USB microphone. The USB mic should come with it's own software and setup should be pretty simple. I hope I have been helpful.

Regarding the canon hv20 camcorder. When using an external canon MIC a) How do you know the mic is working and you are not picking up sound on the internal MIC b)On connecting the external MIC an icon...

If you put the camcorder in manual mode, there is a microphone sensor that will move when sound is picked up by the external microphone. In manual you can keep everything else automatic. The off for the mic means that the built in mic is turned off when an external mic is attached.
