That is a dirty pot switch.. The volume adjusting pot gets dirty.. Two things to try..

1.) With the unit off - spinn the volume min to max many many times at a rapid pace.. This sometimes will displace the debris in the pot..

If that does not work --

2.) Get some "tuner cleaner" in a spray can.. At Radio Shack or a similar store.. Lay the radio on its back so the volume knob is facing up.. Pull the knob off carefully.. Use short controlled bursts of the spray.. A few sprays and spin the knob min to max several times and repeat..

Good luck..

SOURCE: Marshall MG50 DFX, the volume knob OD channel crackles

Either the control is damaged (happens if they get hit) or it is possible the circuit board it is mounted on has broken solder OR worse, a crack near the control. The unit will require servicing. Parts are readily available.

It's most probably dirt on the carbon track of the control causing the problem.
There aere dedicated aerosol sprays to clen them, and you local Radio Shack could have some - if not, WD40 sould work but will leave behind a greasy residue that may trap dust and cause the problem ot reccurr again.

Assuming you can purchase the cleaning spray, you will beed to dismatle the radio far enough to gain access to the rar of the volume control. There are openings in the cover where the leadouts emerge, and the cleaner can be sprayed into the control from there. Then simply rotate the control back and forward fairly quickly over the full range of rotation, reassemble the radio and it should be nice and quiet again. Note you may need to rotate id a dozen times or so if it's really dirty, and in extreme cases it may even need an additional squirt of cleaner :o)

SOURCE: SU-V60 volume knob needs fixing. Very loud

I reckon this could be an older type of volume control, which if it is a spray of Servisol Video 40 on the workings of the control (inside the unit if you can) should correct it. Otherwise it's an IC that controls it and needs to be replaced.

Distortion in speakers when i turn the tuner knob it hits some hard spots they quits

Turn the stereo off, then quickly turn the volume knob back and forth for about a minute to get rid of most of the grime that is causing the static. Then turn it back on. if that doesn't work...

You can try cleaning out the potentiometer.

If that still doesn't work. replace the potentiometer

There is a crackle when i turn the volume knob.

First unplug it. Sounds like you need to spray some tuner cleaner in the pots that are crackling. Pull the knob off and you should be able to use a spray can of tuner cleaner with the straw that comes with them to spray into the potentiometer , then rotate the pot several times while it is still wet. After cleaning them all, wait 10 minutes and then try.

Do you mean just crackling generally or it crackles when you turn it up or down? I have a Marantz PM350, old but still great performance, and I periodically take the volume knob off and spray down the hole with a cleaner/lubricant spray. This does the trick!

I have a yaesu ft-736r with no audio

Hi Jermaine,

It transmits, but no receive, are you sure, have you tried playing around with the volume control?

If, so did that make any crackling noise? If so, then this is due to lack of use of the volume control, many radios, including the old transistors with dials, would make crackling sounds when you adjusted the volume, and as I say, this is due to lack of use, So if this is the case and to get your receiving, turn the volume control up & down fully for a few minutes and while doing so your radio might receive a transmission that will be loud, quiet, loud, quiet, etc., as you play with the knob.

Keep doing so until all crackling has disapeared.

Do this often as possible when firing up your radio for the day, the more use these controls get, the better.

I hope this has answered your query.

Cheers,
Peter

Crackling noise with my volume knob when i turn the volume

It's probably dust in the volume control. It gets in between the carbon track and the wiper that rotates on the track, or the resistive / carbon track inside the control is wearing out. As yours is stereo there will be 2 tracks and 2 wipers, one could be worn more than the other.
This should give you an idea. Inside Pot
