In case of your laptop the easiest method would be using software from Hiren's Boot CD as it's pretty hard to open it up and reach for the CMOS battery or the jumper.
Try to boot up the computer using safe mode first. Keep on tapping the F8 key the moment you turn on the computer. If your computer wont boot to safe mode then you need to re-install windows 7.
if that error occurs while attempting the recovery, typically it indicates a read write error on the hard drive. replace the hard drive and see if the recovery finishes.
(although i have only seen this problem with failing hard drives)
