It sounds like you are booting into DOS. Dos is an old system which does not recognize NTFS partitions, only FAT/FAT32.
What you need to do is use Hiren's Boot CD (download off google).
Use it to boot and use the NTFS4Dos utility first. Then start Dos:
Or once you boot into Dos mode with the CD, type:
A:\>NTFS4DOS
.............it will list harddrive partition letters.........
A:\>C:
The above may look different as A:\> can be any drive the cd assigns. C: is also an example as you will see your drive letter in the list of harddrive partitions detected.
