Error Message 'Er' on frigidaire dishwasher

My frigidaire dishwasher does not run anymore. It is just over a year old and the illuminated message on the front panel reads 'Er' along with the words 'washing', 'Dryer', 'Clean' and a small 's'. I've hit power to reset and it goes from the power failure 'PF' symbol to a number 48 and then back to the original Error message. And depressing any of the other buttons does nothing. Any advice as to what happened or what I need to do to get it running again. It is relatively new and I don't a lot of heavy washing.

  • moolyons May 20, 2009

I have two Frigidaire dishwashers installed in my kitchen (large family and lots of dishes). About a year ago the PF (power failure) message appeared on one of the dishwashers. We flipped the breaker and tried everything we could think of to try to "reset" the unit but couldn't get the PF message to go away and therefore it wouldn't run. We called for service and were told that the control panel needed to be replaced. Fortunately this part was under warranty. About two weeks ago a similar but different error message (this message was about the dishwasher being locked) appeared on the second dishwasher. Again the service tech told us that the control panel needed to be replaced. Clearly this is a huge problem with Frigidaire dishwashers. Unless you are handy, I am afraid that you too will need to call for service. Hopefully your unit is still under warranty (I think it is five years for the control panels) as it is like to cost more than $250.00 for parts and labor. There are tons of complaints about the Frigidaire dishwasher control panels on the internet. Good luck.

I had the same problem. I pressed the "Start Cancel" button, kept it down, then pressed "Rinse Only" button. The display then went clear. I pressed "Start Cancel" again, then "83" showed up on the display. I let it run its cycle, then it corrected itself. A little scary, but it worked. This answer board is great!

Thank You. I did what you said only to have the er s display again. Did it twice. Then I read somewhere else to turn off the unit for 10 minutes to clear the panel. I turned it off at the breaker box. Opened the door, turned the breaker on. pushed rinse only, pushed start and it ran through the cycle. It is fine now TYVM. It was scarey as every other site said 250 to fix.

Thank you rdugas...after pressing rinse and hold the display read 13 and once I hit start it is finishing cycle. Hopefully this works.

I turned off the breaker for 10 min after receiving the flashing ER and once i turned it back on everything functioned as normal. though it did flash PF when i flipped the breaker back on. Frigidaire Gallery DIshwasher.

I am having the same problem. Just over a year old and now looking at having the third control panel installed. This is ridiculous!

  • Terry Ledet
    Terry Ledet Aug 21, 2021

This seems to be working. But in the middle of the first cycle. Fingers crossed. Amazingly, in my other home, I have a 15 year old dishwasher which is running great. Held the start cancel button then pressed rinse only, then start cancel again. Don't think we'll get another Frigidaire. I had to replace a Frigidaire microwave which was only 3 years old at the time. Thanks for the tip.

Dudes. I totally hacked this, and I can make you a hero. If you have:
"illuminated message on the front panel reads 'Er' along with the words 'washing', 'Dryer', 'Clean' and a small 's'."
There is a PDF file for error codes online explaining that your dishwasher thinks that a button is being pressed for more than a minute during your cycle, and it shuts down with an error code. This would explain why the cycle is allowed to start, but stops with an error code.If you are like most, you just use the start button on the far right and not the 10ish other buttons to the left. If you use multiple buttons your solution may vary. I started by taking a kitchen knife to peel up the panel where the buttons are on the very top. It seems dangerous, but it is sticky and will adhere back down when you are done. At first I went as far as to apply a single layer of electrical tape to cover the contacts of all the buttons I do not use, just leaving the one button I use exposed. Turns out that this did not solve the problem, and the one button I used was the problem. So I half covered the contact of the suspect button and it worked. You may need to experiment with tape positioning, because you do want to have contact so that the button functions, but you want to keep it from generating an error code.
A good test to verify that that one of your buttons is a problem, is to peel up the adhesive keypad, start the washer, and leave it loose through a cycle to verify that this is your problem.

It seems to me as though it should not be this complicated for the dishwasher to run correctly. I have had a repairman out to our house two times now and he can't fix our dishwasher with the same problem as the one above, except instead of "48" we have "17" which I believe correlates to the rinse cycle..

Makes sense, since most appliance techs will not mitigate these kind of mechanical problems, they will just replace the control panel at great cost, and some profit. I'm going to try this fix, because it makes sense that the most used button will wear first. Thanks, Don!

THANK YOU SO MUCH DON! You saved my dishwasher and not to mention $150+ that I would have spent replace the control panel (to replace the touch pad).

    MY PROCESS:

From looking up the "eR" code online on removeandreplace.com, the message was:

Frigidaire Dishwasher Error Code = ER
Error Problem / Condition = Membrane Switch Failure
Check / Repair / Solution = Main Control Board has detected a stuck key or a key pressed for more than one minute. Check connection from keypad to Main Control Board. If correct, replace keypad. If error still exist, replace Main Control Board.

So then I followed a Youtube video to check the cord between keypad to main control. I took apart the dishwasher, disconnected and reconnected the cord between keypad to main control and put the dishwasher back together. But there was no change when I plugged the machine back in - it showed a "PF" (power failure) message and still had the same error message after I manage to start a cycle (took many tries).

I followed the hack and peeled back the touch pad with a knife on the right side (because I use the "start/cancel" button the most). Be careful when you peel it back and go slowly.

There are two layers. One is the where you press the button (the other side of it should have a very thin metal plate, so that when you press it, it'll "pop"). The other layer is where the signal gets sent to the mother board.

When I first did it, I peeled both layers. So then I separated the two layers and pressed down on the bottom layer to ensure that it adheres to the machine and stays there.

Also when you press the top layer back on, make sure that it is placed in the same way before you peeled it (the 1st and 2nd layer needs to match for the key to work).

Then I placed a piece of electric tape on half of the "power button" and "start button" and started a cycle, but that didn't work. Still had an error message after a few minutes into the cycle. (left the touch pad loose for further tweaking if needed).

Then I cover up the ENTIRE button for "POWER PLUS", "START/CANCEL" and started a cycle. It had a "delay 1 hr" message (which is weird because I had never used that function (don't press that button much) and did not use that button for this cycle. I also tried to undo the delay function but that didn't work. So had to unplug the machine again and tweak the electrical tape.

So what I did next was cover up the ENTIRE button for "POWER PLUS", "START/CANCEL" and "DELAY", and started a quick cycle (when I started the cycle, I held "start" button down a bit to start the cycle because I covered up the entire button). Then the DISHWASHER WORKED (and it is still working as I am typing up this post).

Because I am washing my dishes, I will not be tweaking the electrical tape placement until my next load. But I may just leave it the way it is because it's not broken. :D

    THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:
-When you are tweaking the electrical tape or working with the dishwasher, make sure you disconnect the power.
-Also, if you suspect it is a touch pad problem and assuming the mother board is working properly, be very observant in what the machine is doing and what the display is showing. This will give you clues as to which button is the problem (I did not anticipate "delay" as one of them).
-Only take apart the machine after watching Youtube videos on how it's done and if you are certain you can put the machine back to the way you've found it.

For my situation, I was fairly sure it was the touch pad (control panel) that was the culprit. I thought that if I have to replace the control panel ($153+ on Frigidaire.com), might as well try this hack. There was nothing to lose and all for the gain.

This is probably more detail than needed, but hope it helps!

Between which layers should the tape be placed? I just happened to check the function of my buttons and my water temp button does not change the temp indicator leds correctly. i suspect this is my problem button.

  • Kayla Peng
    Kayla Peng Dec 06, 2020

@ShawnO Sorry, there were actually 3 layers in there (#1 black layer-where we press, #2 plastic layer with the thin metal plates and #3 receptor for signal to be sent to motherboard). You want the tape to be in between layers 2 and 3.

TIP: When the machine is flashing the ER/S/CLEAN/DRYING, look at the buttons and see which one is flashing. That might be the culprit.

I actually went back on here bc I had the SAME problem again with a new control panel that I had replaced about a year ago.

This time, while displaying ER code, it was flashing "WATER TEMP". I peeled back the 2nd layer and used electrical tape to cover up the entire "WATER TEMP" button. I plugged the machine back in and saw the expected PF error message. I pressed "Start/Cancel" and to my delight, the display then went blank, instead of the ER code.

I tested it by pressing the "RINSE ONLY" and the display showed "17", which is minutes for rinse only cycle to complete. Then I placed my dishes in and pressed "NORMAL CYCLE" and it is working as intended.

Funny thing is, I actually forgot I had previously fixed this before. I had tried about 3 other times to fix it some other ways. I did see this page, but thought eh, I'll try this hack as a last resort today (before I buy a new one). Then I clicked "show more comments" and saw my own detailed guide. LOL. I couldn't believe I had written this detailed guide. Thought it was a glitch in the name or something. I had completely forgotten about it. Anyway, it's fixed now! I hope next time, it doesn't take me 3+ weeks of handwashing dishes to remember this. ;P

    Hope this helps someone! :D

Thanks for this. Hubs was cleaning the black strip and now the error ER comes up. I have cleared it, unplugged it, done the breaker thing to no avail. The dishwasher starts under Rinse Only. I am in my early 60's so want to make sure I do not mess up. I peel back the black strip with a kitchen knife ~ what kind? I then have to take another layer off? What color is electrical tape? (Hubs is legally blind in one eye so I handle all of this and my handyman is Not returning any of my messages yikes!)! Do I cut little pieces to stick inbetween or on top of? Or fold up or? What do you mean by half cover?

Thanks so much! I really do not have the extra funds to get a new machine or pay an appliance person to come out... And certainly do not want to hand wash dishes ~ had to call a friend to ask how to - for real...

I read that flashing ER is a common problem with Frigidaire Dishwashers and could be a button pushed down for too long that causes the ER flashing code. Mine ONLY flashed ER with no other lights.

I had a feeling it was the START button because it is the one we use the most. I opened the door up and removed the circuit board below the push buttons on the left side. ER stopped flashing right away. I put the circuit board back in... and after about 1 minute ER started flashing again. I removed the board again and it instantly stopped.

I inspected the buttons on the circuit board and they all seemed to work correctly. So I began to look at the SLOT the board slides into. I noticed that below each area you push to activate a control was a piece of plastic that flexes in and out making the contact from where you push the screen... to where it hits the buttons on the board. My thought was that one of the plastic pieces must have become weakened over time and stayed pressed against the button JUST enough to give me my error. I decided to take a nail file and while pushing down the START on the surface... I filed down the piece of plastic that pushed in. I did this for each piece of plastic that would make contact with the buttons on the board.

When I reinserted the board... I got no error. I put everything back together and no problems since. ;)

Medic AMS - I had the same issue - the ER code kept flashing and nothing would clear it. I read your comment about it being a mechanical issue, following the hypothesis that the assembly itself was causing a button to be permanently pressed. I took both the right side and left side boards out of the clips and turned the machine on - no more ER code. Then I did one at a time and it turned out to be on the Wash Options (right) side. I just flexed all of the clamps with a flat blade screwdriver, reinserted the circuit boards, and followed up with a couple more tests - again no more ER code! This held for a few minutes then the Er code came back. I think the last two buttons on each side were getting pushed by the cover. I clipped a couple tiny shims from a larger wooden shim and used those to maintain separation for those buttons by inserting them between the ends of the circuit boards and the cover. I put it all back together and am running a full wash cycle now. For about $0.05, the unit runs fine now. Thanks for helping me get this sorted!!

Don Marshall (earlier poster) had posted his hack of peeling back the control panel layer. I successfully fixed my dishwasher (twice) using his method and detailed my process. Hope this helps someone!

MY PROCESS from 9/2018:

From looking up the "eR" code online on removeandreplace.com, the message was:

Frigidaire Dishwasher Error Code = ER
Error Problem / Condition = Membrane Switch Failure
Check / Repair / Solution = Main Control Board has detected a stuck key or a key pressed for more than one minute. Check connection from keypad to Main Control Board. If correct, replace keypad. If error still exist, replace Main Control Board.

There are three layers:
1. black layer - where we press
2. plastic layer with the thin metal plates - when you press it, it'll "pop"
3. receptor for signal to be sent to motherboard.

You only want to peel layers 2 and 3 (layers 1 and 2 should remain adhered together). When I first did this, I peeled all 3 layers. So then I separated the bottom layer and pressed down on it to ensure that it adheres to the machine and stays there.

You want the electrical tape to be in between layers 2 and 3.

For my situation, I was fairly sure it was the touch pad (control panel) that was the culprit. I thought that if I have to replace the control panel ($153+ on Frigidaire.com), might as well try this hack. There was nothing to lose and all for the gain.

12/6/2020

I actually went back on here bc I had the SAME problem again with a new control panel that I had replaced about a year ago.

My observation/process:

While dishwasher was displaying ER/S/CLEAN/DRY error code, the "WATER TEMP" and "RINSE ONLY" buttons were flashing.

Then I placed my dishes in and pressed "NORMAL CYCLE" and it is now working as intended.

This is probably more detail than needed, but hope it helps someone!

So i had ER. I followed owner manual to clean out bottom trap (glass trap) and it was gunky. Put all back, turned power on, it started a reset dispkaing 188, 199, but no turn on, then ER MSG AGAIN.

ok, so reading say "stuck button". So i started rapidly wiping across all touch panel to get a lil heat from friction. BOOM - delay timer came on. THEN I HIT THE START for 3secs to clear. It did. Set to a rinse only just to cycle thru. Machine now rinsing. HOPING when cycle concludes it will have reset. Then i will do a regular was cycle before i call and cxxl repair man visit for tomorrow.

Ok I was having the same problem.... peeled back the control panel. Cleaned the contacts same problem. To my surprise.... it just so happened that one of the screws in front that holds the dishwasher to counter had worked itself loose and was continually causing the delay function to make contact for over a minute. I retapped and installed and bam. Now my dishwasher works. Thanks to all for the trouble shooting tips!

New $100 console panel (for me, part # 154639212) fixed the problem. You can tell that the control board is probably fine, because it is giving you this fairly detailed error ('Er' along with the words 'washing', 'Dryer', 'Clean' and a small 's') that means that there is a short or bridge in the console panel circuitry.

How do I find out the error codes?

Good Afternoon Delia Collins, thank you for your post!

Based off the information you have provided your Frigidaire dishwasher is flashing an "ER" error code on the panel. Typically, the "ER" stands for an error code sometimes to help clear out a false error code you can perform a reset on your dishwasher. In order to do that you would need to disconnect power from your dishwasher for approximately ten minutes.

If you continue to experience an issue with the error code I would recommend contacting a technician for proper repairs. The technician will be able to properly diagnosis your dishwasher and this will help you to avoid any unnecessary part purchases. Hopefully this is helpful. -Matt

The illuminated message on the front panel reads 'Er' along with the words 'washing', 'Dryer', 'Clean' and a small " S ". I have even unplugged it and when plugged...

Hi

"Er Clean S" is a common error with Frigidaire which means shorted keypad. The issue is with the touchpad/keypad that should be replaced, under warranty. However, before replacing the keypad you can unplug it and take it apart completely and use a hair dryer to blow some warm air on the keypad assembly to blow the moisture off but again doing this will void warranty so decide if you want to get this done under warranty or you want to do it yourself. Hope this helps...please post back for further assistance.

Error codes flashing

Hi, This is mainly due to control panel failure. This unit does not ventfrom the front like most do, so there needs to be some clearance above the top of the tub to avoid blocking the vent fan, otherwise moisture gets trapped in the machine and works it's way into the control panel eventually..

There is an ER message flashing.we tried pressing cancel but nothing happens. it's like all the settings are frozen

Hi,

This is a Common Error Message. Try to Disconnect the Power Supply, and wait for few minutes, say 30 minutes to Turn it ON.

If still ER message is displayed, you need to Replace either Touchpad or Control Board.

Let me know, if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Error flashing and won't reset.

hi there,

PF stands for power failure. the first you should do is check your house breaker and make sure that you did not trip the fuse.

Does anything run? Can you hear the motor running? If not, you have no power coming into the machine. In this case it's the main control board that needs to be replaced.

If the motor hums, it means you have power to the d/w, in that case you need to replace the touchpad.

thanks

Er message on panel of Frigidaire GLD3450RD

I had the same problem last spring. Unfortnuatly, the problem is within the electronic control. Steam leaks in, due to an improper seal ring. Humidity stay in the compartment and eventually, the contact on the wire ribbon corrodes. For me, it meant a new electronic module.

If the eletronic module is ok, then the only working solution require that you order and install a "fit kit" from Frigidaire.

Some models even have a recall made form Frigidaire. Better check with them.

Good luck!

Error code ER then UO any ideas?

So far so good. I fixed mine by removing the vent and even though it says no repairable parts I disassembled it then removed the rubber gasket and cleaned it with a brush under hot water. I then cleaned the plastic ring it seals against. Next I removed the spring and stretched it to make it about a quarter inch longer and then reinstalled the spring then the rubber gasket and then closed up the unit. So far it is working fine. I suspect the real problem is that there is a tiny sensor that needs to be covered when the vent is closed. If this is not covered the uo error code is generated.
