If it still runs good after 10 years,Don't try to fix it.
Preventive maintenance to keep it running smooth, should be done annually from day one, starting now would more that likely have the opposite effect.

You could check the belt if applicable.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Washing Machine Maintenance

Once a year you should take the time to give the washer machine that serves you so well a little bit of tender loving care. This bit of time may prevent you from having washing machine problems in the future. If you can prevent just one washing machine repair it will be well worth your time. While you are doing the preventive maintenance, you also can do a bit of washing machine cleaning as well.

Washing machines are not fun to fix, here are some things that will help you to prevent that emergency repair.

-Check the hoses on the back of the washing machine for cracks, rust or corrosion on the connecting fittings, blisters on the hoses, and or leaks.
-Cracks in the hoses are signs of a breakdown of the rubber and aging
-Blisters are a sign that the water is getting through the inner lining of the
hose
-If your have corrosion then you either had or have a leak
-If left go the hose may be very difficult to remove in the future

-Check that your washer is setting solidly on the floor and is level.
-Out of level and flopping washers can help to cause out of balance
banging, noise, etc.. leading to premature failure of the washer

-Check to make sure that there is no water that drips from the inside of the washer when it is off.
-Dripping water is a sign that the solenoid valve or water inlet valve is
starting to wear and not closing properly. Replace the valve before is fails
completely.

This also is a good time to run your washer through a cleaning cycle. There are different things to use to clean the washer. One of the good old “green” standby’s is plain old vinegar. Dump a cupful in the washer and run through a short cycle. Other cleaning solutions could include things like Clorox, or other household detergents. There also are commercial cleaning products for cleaning washer machines also.

By doing these things once a year you will help to make sure that your washer will give you the best service possible.

Your vehicle's routine maintenance schedule

Reasons to perform routine Preventive Maintenance on your vehicle

Preventive Maintenance is a schedule of planned maintenance actions aimed at the prevention of breakdowns and failures. The primary goal of preventive maintenance is to help prolong the life of the vehicle and reduce vehicle failures therefore providing a worry free driving experience. Automotive technicians say the key to keeping vehicles running well today and down the road, is routine preventive maintenance. Many drivers tend to stall when it comes to keeping up with some everyday automotive basics. Maintenance

A recent survey by the Car Care Council found:

* 38 percent of cars had low or dirty engine oil.
* 54 percent had low tire pressure.
* 28 percent had inadequate cooling protection.
* 19 percent needed new belts.
* 16 percent had dirty air filters.
* 10 percent had low or contaminated brake fluid.
Some of the most important preventive maintenance steps you can do yourself and save you some time and money. Here is a quick list of some of the most common preventive maintenance steps that you should be able to handle yourself.
Airfilter: Check it every month. Replace it when it becomes dirty or as part of a tune -up. It is easy to reach, right under the big metal 'lid', in a carbureted engine; or in a rectangular box at the forward end of the air in a duct hose assembly.
Battery: Extreme caution should be taken while handling a battery since it can produce explosive gases. It is advisable not to smoke, create a spark or light a match near a battery. Always wear protective glasses and gloves.
Belts: Inspect belts and hoses smoothly. Replace glazed, worn or frayed belts. Replace bulging, rotten or brittle hoses and tighten clamps. If a hose looks bad, or feels too soft or too hard, it should be replaced.
Brake Fluid: Check the brake fluid monthly. First wipe dirt from the brake master cylinder reservoir lid. Pry off the retainer clip and remove the lid or unscrew the plastic lid, depending on which type your vehicle has. If you need fluid, add the improved type and check for possible leaks throughout the system. Do not overfill.
Engine Oil; Check the oil after every fill up. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean. Insert it fully and remove it again. If it is low, add oil. To maintain peak performance, the oil should be changed every 3,000 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first. Replace the oil filter with every oil change.
Exhaust: Look underneath for loose or broken exhaust clamps and supports. Check for holes in muffler or pipes. Replace the rusted or damaged parts. Have the emission checked at once per year for compliance with local laws.
Hoses: Inspect the hoses and belts monthly. If a hose looks bad, or feels too soft or too hard, it should be replaced.
Lights: Make sure that all your lights are clean and working, including the brake lights, turn signals and emergency flashers. Keep spare bulbs and fuses in your vehicle.
Oil Filter: To maintain peak performance, change oil every 3 months or 3,000 kms whichever comes first. Replace oil filter with every oil change.
Power Steering Fluid: Check the power steering fluid level once per month. Check it by removing the reservoir dipstick. If the level is down, add fluid and inspect the pump and hoses for leaks.
Shock Absorbers: Look for signs of oil seepage on shock absorbers, test shock action by bouncing the car up and down. The car should stop bouncing when you step back. Worn or leaking shocks should be replaced. Always replace shock absorbers in pairs.
Tires: Keep tires inflated to recommended pressure. Check for cuts, bulges and excessive tread wear. Uneven wear indicates tires are misaligned or out of balance.
Transmission Fluid: Check transmission fluid monthly with engine warm and running, and the parking brake on. Shift to drive, then to park. Remove dipstick, wipe dry, insert it and remove it again. Add the approved type fluid, if needed. Never overfill.
Washer Fluid: Keep the windshield washer fluid reservoir full. Use some of it to clean off the wiper blades.
Wiper Blades: Inspect the windscreen wiper blades whenever you clean your windshield. Do not wait until the rubber is worn or brittle to replace them. They should be replaced at least once per year, and more often if smearing occurs. Remember, preventive maintenance is easy and you will benefit from it in the long run by saving yourself time and money at the repair shop.

10 year old Kenmore Ultra is leaking early in the washing cycle. Wondering if this is worth fixing or need to bite the wallet and buying a new one. I am worried about affecting the new cabinets even...

At 10 years old I wouldn't put much if any money into it. Do check the water connections as it may be something simple that just needs to be tightened or a washer replacement. Replacing the valve is a simple and inexpensive fix but don't bother going further than that. If you can't DIY it's not worth spending the money for a service call. Kenmore has a wide range of units at various price levels all built by the major players. I have an 8 year old Kitchenaide (made by Whirlpool) that is very quiet and still runs like new. A new unit will wash better and probably use less energy. If you buy an "EnergyStar" rated model you may qualify for a rebate as well.

I have exactly the same problem!

Try using the tub clean cycle and use a good dose of bleach or vinegear. Here is how to run the tub clean cycle.

To start the TUB CLEAN cycle:
1. Remove any clothing or items from the washer and close the door.
2. Open the dispenser drawer and add liquid chlorine bleach to the bleach compartment.
NOTE: Do not add any detergent to the detergent compartments. Excessive suds may be produced and leak
from the washer.
3. Close the dispenser drawer slowly.
4. Power On and then press the Extra Rinse button for 3 seconds. (Prewash option will be selected.)
5. Press the Start/Pause button to start.
6. After the cycle is complete, leave the door open to dry around the washer door opening, door seal and
door glass.

Preventive maintenance?

You should buy some c.l.r. (calcium, lime, rust) remover. It's packaged in a grey bottle at any supermarket, drug store, ect.Pour a cup in and run a cycle once a month. This will prevent any lime build up from scaling the dishwasher due to hard water.

A technician once told me to run my Kenmore Elite 3t ( without clothing ) with some bleach to clean the machine on the inside. I do not have a "clean machine" cycle. However I don't remember how much...

Hello , pour the bleach into where the soap would go [about 2 cups], then fill your softner and bleach containers up as well , run a normal wash with an extra rinse , the bleach will not hurt it so the more the better but to a certain point. this should fix alot of the noticible mildew but to get it all use a brush and scrub with bleach.

Washer filled but does not run at all

When the unit completes its filling cycle, a relay will be activated to start the wash cycle. A 10 year old unit probably has dirty/corroded or otherwise malfunctioning relay contacts. This should be repaired by a qualified repairman as high voltages pass through these relays.
