Static with computer speakers pentium 4 dimension 4700 series

I own a Dell pentium 4 processor 520 (Dimension 4700 series) with 2.8ghz that has been putting out horrible static through the speakers. I've tried unplugging and rebooting and I believe it's the subwoofer. A friend recently gave me a pair of speakers (harman/kardon) to try. Do I need a subwoofer to go with these speakers? My computer came with speakers attached to a subwoofer.
I need help!!!

i've got this problem with my dimension 4700, and i've read several places that overheating of the CPU can cause static in the sound. several people have said that when they cooled their CPU more, the static went away. apparently 4700s have a heat problem, especially went in a small area or pushed against the back of a desk or wall. dell sent some of them out with an unusal fan configuration that they claim is intentional, but many people have fixed the heat problem by reversing the lower fan on the back of the unit to blow out of the box instead of sucking in. give it a google and you'll find a couple of step-by-steps for doing it yourself... I'm going to flip mine around sometime this week and see if it solves my static problem!!!

I reversed my fan last night, and I believe it solved the static problem. Only time will tell, I suppose. When I first used the computer after flipping the fan, both fans suddenly were extremely loud and noisy and rattling. But now that I have had my computer running for about an hour or so, they got quieter and quieter and now are completely silent. (I can still feel the air blowing though). I suppose it realized that it wasn't going to overheat anymore and didn't have to run the fans so hard!

I consider my problem solved. I'll be back if it changes, but so far I highly recommend flipping the fan to run the other way. It was really very simple to do once I understood how to disconnect and reconnect all the parts! If anyone needs step by step instructions and they can't find them, please email me at timm100 [at] mail [dot] chapman [dot] edu. I am very new to this whole internal computer thing myself, so I know how confusing it can be!

Green light comes on with CR3J1 beside it

The green light with "CR3J1" beside it on your Dell Dimension 4700 is most likely an indicator for the power supply. The "CR3J1" is a code for the power supply model number. The green light indicates that the power supply is functioning correctly and providing power to the system.

You can try to reseat the CPU (processor) chip. Inorder to do that you have to remove the heatsink and then reapply thermal paste (compound) to the surface of processor. The processor rarely goes bad.

For best results, you should run the Dell System Analyzer on your computer:
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/DellPartsFamily.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=19&s=dhs&~ck=anavml&dgc=SM&cid=54281&lid=1472034

Updating the BIOS, while not difficult, is not usually recommended unless it will solve a problem. The reason for that is you must follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer exactly or you could render your computer useless.
If the Dell System Analyzer determines that you can upgrade to a P4 660, then go ahead and replace the P4 520. If the P4 660 doesn't work, then the best approach would be to re-install the P4 520, make sure the computer works, then update the BIOS after carefully reading and understanding all the instructions provided by Dell.

Dell Dimension 4700 PC Speaker No Sound

Check to make sure all cables are connected. After this you will need to click on your sound card properties and set it to 5.1. which will allow all the speakers to play.

Please note you will need to have a card that supports 5.1 sound I do not believe the stock card in the Dell supports this feature which could be the problem.

I bought a pentium 4 3.0 ghz 800 mhz & my

The motherboard chipset of the Dell Dimension 2300 Desktop PC, will not support a processor with an 800MHz Front Side Bus frequency rate.

Only Intel Pentium 4's that use a Socket 478, 1.75 Volts, and a maximum of a 400MHz FSB.

The Intel Pentium 4 HT 3.0GHz processor has an 800MHz FSB, (As you have already stated), and uses 1.475 to 1.55 Volts.

The motherboard chipset for that Dell Dimension 2300, is an Intel 845GL.

This list on Wikipedia, shows you parameters the Intel 845GL chipset supports,

Not a good outcome, sorry. Just stating the facts.
