Fully charged battery. no response when key is turned to start

Worked fine yesterday.
where is the fuse?

  • Anonymous Jan 29, 2009

I downloaded the elec diagram and it turns out there are three safety devices that block started operation.

    first is the seat switch

    second is the PTO switch

    third is the clutch/brake device.

this is ridiculous!. the seat switch is easy to locate and test but I have yet to find the other two plus those two safety switches do not show up on the factory parts diagram(only on the elec diagram)

I like to start by making sure the starter gear not locked into the flywheel , this happens a lot on briggs take your hand turn the flywheel screen counter clock wise it will walk the gear down , you should be able to turn eng by hand now if not gas leaked into eng .
or eng is locked up.
Next I like to jump the starter solenoid to find it follow the heavy red wire from the battery it will led to it, there are 2 kinds 4 post and 3 post looks like you have 4 to test a 4 post unplug both small wires from the spades , you will need to small pices of wire hook one small wire to spade and ground it to frame of tractor now take the other wire hook it to the other spade and touch it to large stud that leads to the battery make sure you have parking brake set it may crank over, this by passes all safety switches and starter switch if it cranks over battrey good starters good solenoid is good .
safty switch on clutch pedal of mower deck engage switch not seat switch .
IF it does not crank over use a heavy wire or pliers jump large stud to large stud if cranks over solenoid is bad .

Sounds like a safety switch concern. Most mowers need the brake or clutch pedal depressed or the park brake engaged for power to go to the starter. Could also be the seat switch. My John Deere LT160 needs the brake pedal depressed or I can lock the park brake on and start it without being in the seat. Hope this gives you some ideas.

No power to dash, key in ignition does nothing.

If I understand correctly, the headlights and brakelights work but the vehicle will not start and the dash lights do not work. That sounds impossible, so I'll merely suggest that you check the battery connectors and see that they are tightened down snug.

You should not be able to easily move them with a pliers. Sometimes, if you loosen them just a tad, and twist them a little, and retighten, you get better contact.

My Case 580 Super E was running fine yesterday. I went to start it today and no go. Battery is fully charged, 12.5 volts going to starter and up to alternator. i think it might be the ignition key switch?...

FIrst off 12.5 volts is not full charge on the battery, around 12.8 would be 100% charge but you should have plenty to start it...can you run a jumper cable from the battery positive terminal to the starter terminal and will it start then?

Murray 17.5 HP mower - no noise when turning key? Maybe ignition?

Look near the starter solenoid for a fuse. It is probably under the hood near the steering column. If fuse is good, problem is likely a safety switch.
