I have the same problem. I opened my Maxtor OneTouch & put the HDD into a USB 3 enclosure & it worked fine.

USB ports. can fail. for 3 reasons
a USB port will do windows sounds for USB connections, Dingdong and is good
if missing that , USB ports are dead or windows sounds turned off.
if the port USB beeps madly this is usually the BIOS monitor of said port seeing your short out the USB port Vbus power pin.
    that means:'
    1: cable shorted,
    2: drive shorted.
3: the lame old PC can only do 100mA current and the normal drive need 200mA to start the
motor and you PC can not do that, due to weak USB ports.

    end USB report.

if device manager shows the USB port dead
that means the USB drivers are missing or corrupted.

soonhoe cure is that old XP era chip set
in the drive is not supported today, in w10.

in fact 10000 USB devices are not now supported with W10, 11 years later.
    and you hit bingo there.

Is this a new drive or have you been using it for some time and it just started doing this? What make/model computer do you have?

Usually when they start beeping like that, it's an indication that the drive is not getting enough power. It's possible that you are plugging into unpowered USB ports. Try using the USB ports that are directly connected to the motherboard (the ones in the back.)
Use USB 2.x ports if they are available. Try connecting the drive to another computer.

I have a One Touch 4 that I use for occasional backups. Had exact problem, but I had forgotten to use the dedicated USB cable with the double USB standard size plugs. Once I remembered that cable and connected with it, drive worked fine.

I had this same problem and spent about 5 hours trying to figure it out. For me it happened to be that I recently installed the "HID non-user input data filter" through the Windows Update website. I didn't even know what it was when I installed it, I'm starting to learn to not install anything unless there is an issue that needs to be fixed. I then got into my device manager (right click "My Computer" and choose "manage") and expanded the "Human Interface Devices", right click the "HID non-user input data filter" and choose disable. This fixed my issue. I tried to uninstall it, but upon reboot it reinstalls itself. I have sent an email to Microsoft to find out how to permanently remove it. Hope this fixes your issue.

Hi, I my Maxtor 3100 80 GB clicking noise inside, the motor is working, the pc is not recognized.
I try with data recovery, but nothing happens. I put it on power, it start working, but when I put the usb cable from the hard disk to the pc the noise starts, clicking like a clock. Is it something that I can do it myself? How I will find exactly the problem, if is the hard disk or the circuit or something else.
Thanks.

SOURCE: maxtor one touch 4 mini 250GB hard drive beeping

I had the same problem and the Maxtor/Seagate website did not have any solutions. I finally got in touch with Tech Support and got a fix. I was using it with a Dell tower and plugging into a USB port in the front. I also was using an after market cable.

I learned the Maxtor is a power hog and beeps and shuts down when it is not getting enough power. I did not know but the USB ports on the front of a desktop/tower computer do not provide as much power as a port on the back (the back ports are sometimes directly connected to the motherboard). I got a USB extension cable and connected it to a USB port in the back and it solved the problem.

I also learned that most laptop USB ports are not powerful enough to run the Maxtor. Mine would also not work if you attempt to share it by using an unpowered USB hub. I have gotten it to work with a powered desktop USB hub (Belkin).

I believe that this may explain why you get a "Y" cable with the drive. I could not find an explaination for the cable or how to use. There may be an accessory to purchase that attached to the cable and powers it.

SOURCE: Maxtor 3200 beeps but doesn't work

The heads are riding on the platers. The drive is dead and not worth trying to fix. If there is data on it that you simply can not lose do a google search for "data recovery failed harddrive". The rule of thumb for a decent lad that can do this is price, if it costs less then 75$ per meg they probably are not that good.

My computer stopped recognizing my seagate

same thing happened with me, Looks like your pc usb slot is not providing enough power to the drive wither use a Y - USB cable (comes with three USB ends ; where in you will insert two USB cable ends to two usb ports on your pc and the other to ur hard disk) or buy a powered USB root hub.

Maxator hard drive not being recognized

Well all good things must end and it sounds like this one has. If it doesn't connect in either computer then something inside has either been bumped loose or it's broken.

Maxtor One Touch 4 is beeping when I connect it by usb

Does the HDD spinup?
My slightly educated guess... the Ext 2.5in HDD requires more power than it is getting from the single port.

1. Try another port
2. Try it on another computer (all USB ports do not provide 250ma to a load)You may be sharing this avail voltage with all plugged in devices and will have to pull 1-2 others to get the HDD online. Since STARTUP current is high, the HDD pulls all it can from the ports (logical) then settles down and uses 1/3 to keep spinning. After the HDD is up and online, try plugging the other USB devices back in, 1 at a time. If it stalls the HDD - you know the why
3. Take it back and find something a bit less power-hungry (Like Hitichi or Toshiba)

Maxtor one touch III 500g, got knocked over and now when its switched on it just beeps at me, and nothing appears to happen. I can't see any damage but it's certainly not working.

First things first;
hello
1) verify the connection
2) you have to change the Disk on another USB port 2.0
3) if you got warranty I suggest you change the device.** if apply.
good luck
