Thank you for the explanation but my problem lies on the sun roof still. When l press the button mention about eithr way, the operations dont happen as expected. Its like the whole sequence is opposite and confused. Sometimes the inner cover closes living the roof open and at some moments the roof just opens a few inches like its jammed somewhere. Meanwhile the back sun glass remains tilted and never closes. As l write to you the back glass is on the tilted position and never bows down.

We recently had the same problem with our Sept 2004 3.0i. The rear portion of the sunroof refused to close. The roof did give intermittent problems from new, though we did not report it during the warranty period.
Eventually BMW agreed to replace the whole roof under warranty (despite the car being out of it's 3 year warranty period). We did have to pay for some labour costs however approx GBP200.
Coincidentally we now have a sunroof problem with our 2006 535d. Thankfully this is within the warranty period so BMW will replace the whole cassette for free. Damned inconvenient though !!!!

I own a 2005 X5 BMW and experienced the same problem.  Fortunately the car is still under warranty so BMW is fixing it.

Title says X5, but description says X3. i'll explain for an X5, but X3 with the pano should be the same. and i'll explain function of the roof, not reprogramming.

button is located on the panel at the top near the front & center windshield. its the switch on the far left on this panel. its a switch that not only toggles, but also slides forward & back.

with your finger in front of the button, slide it back & release. this will make the cover slide back and store revealing the sun roof. you know have 2 options (tilt the sunroof up or open the roof completely).

to tilt it up, press up on the rear of the button and release. the rear of both roofs will pop up. to close, push up and release the front of the button or slide the switch forward.

to slide it open completely, repeat what you did to open the protective cover (slide the switch from front to back). the roof will open completely and stow out of the way. to close, slide the switch forward and release. pano roof will now close.

to close the cover, slide the switch forward again.

neat trick: if you want to tilt the sunroof open without opening the protective cover, press up on the rear of the button (when the cover is closed) and release. the cover will separate in the middle exposing about a 2-3 inch mesh, then tilts the sunroof open. to close, push the button forward again.

also, if you are above a certain speed (can't remember what it is off hand) with the sunroof open or tilted, it will close automatically, then perform the neat trick on its own to keep air coming in.

one last trick: if you want to open the windows and sunroof from outside, press & hold the unlock button (forward button on the key) and you will see the windows go down, then the roof will open to vent. releasing the button will stop the motion of the windows & roof.

hope this answered what you were asking.

try this and see if it helps.

with the truck started and running, push the center of this button straight up (remember the center, not the fwd or back part) and hold it. keep holding it even when the roof starts moving. it should cycle through its operations and eventually stop in the closed position. release the button and turn the car off. restart it and see if the roof works normally now.

if this doesn't work, then it may require a trip to the dealer for further inspection.

Comments:After changing my battery, I had the same problem of the sunroof not closing completely, but staying in the tilted position.
This solution worked GREAT!!
Start the car, and hold the control button IN, do not push it either forward and backwards for about 1 minute.
The sunroof runs through it's entire cycle of functions, then turn the car off.
It should be back to normal.
Saved myself as trip dealer and knowing BMW service, probably lots of $$$$.

Sun roof wont close

theres a way to close it by taking off the panel above that covers the motor and putting a allen wrench into the middle of the motor unit and turning it i think clockwise. If the gears are stripped it wont work...but if its just the motor then manually turning the gear should close it. I figured out which way it needed to be turned to close then put a allen attachment on my cordless drill and made it easier cause it will take awhile

BMW X 3 Panoramic sun roof initialization.

hello X3 driver, you can initialize the sunroof by pushing straight up on the button, (the same position that is use for vent). You will need to hold the button for atleast 30 seconds. The cassette should go to vent position, then to close, then to fully open, then back to close. Once the fully closed position has been reached, release the button. that's all there is too it. Glad to see BMW is taking care of it's customers.
