Your hard drive is most likely bad or the ribbon cable is not connected.

SOURCE: Bad Harddrive

Can you just clarify that you installed XP with the new IDE drive installed in the notebook and that you have selected disc 0 in the bios as IDE and that it is aslo set to boot from that drive?

What you are describing also fits the symptoms of installing XP on a SATA drive without installing SATA drivers first. (XP doesn't install SATA drivers, Vista does.)

So this does sound like a bios setting issue

Typically this is caused by a corrupt windows file which can be caused by a bad disk drive or a software error that has screwed up the disk indexes.

Use your Win7 disk and do a system repair (NOT INSTALL). Often this will clear up any problem.

After that it gets complicated and you probably will need the assistance of a local computer store.

Problem with HP pavillion ze4900 harddrive. bios says no IDE device when trying to find hard drive.

Hello,

You can try to boot from CD/DVD drive with XP cd to see if the install program can find the hard drive. Try to use default setting in the BIOS.

Sounds to me like your hard drive crashed. I had one that did this and same thing. You can either replace the hard drive, use an external hard drive/flash drive (load the os and download laptop drivers) or use a cd based OS like Knoppix.

If you need help with the XP CD let me know.

I hope this helps!!!

INSTALLING WINDOWS XP ON A SATA HARD DRIVE

SATA HARD DRIVE ? XP INSTALLATION
The problem is that XP installation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on a disk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then, XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP.
The FIX.
Go into the BIOS and disable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is a IDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows has been installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver), then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.
If enabling the SATA in the BIOS does not allow the computer to boot up with SATA hard drive then change the BIOS back to what it was previously.

New hard drive operating system not found

The reason why you cannot install Windows on your hard drive is this model Sony has a SATA disk controller.

Your hard drive may have failed.
I suggest you remove your hard drive and re-connect it to your laptop to make sure it is make proper connection. Boot up and go into the BIOS to see if the hard disk is detected.
If the hard disk is not detected then most likely the hard disk has failed.
To get your laptop working, you will need to purchase a new hard disk and install Windows on the new hard disk plus the Pavilion device drivers and your programs,
You can download the device drivers from the Compaq/HP WEBsupport/download page. Make sure you select your model laptop and the XP orVista Windows version of the drivers you require and install them. Click onthis link to download the drivers: -

We do not say that the hard drive is damage maybe the IDE was faulty already. You may open your laptop and check the hard drive. Try to replace the IDE to check if the hard drive is good.

It could also be the conncetion came loose, which can happen with IDE hard drives if the laptop gets moved around a lot. Remove the hard drive and take it to an electronics store to have it tested, or if you have a friend with an external enclosure (2.5" IDE interface, they cost between$10-20) you can hook it up to another computer via the USB port

Installation of windows XP

preachw996 has it... you must enable the SATA drive you want to install XP onto as your 1st IDE DRIVE/DEVICE (ie. you are telling BIOS to dummy a SATA drive in to the 1st IDE position).

Only then will you be able to recognise the drive as a boot device.

This is done in BIOS.

ACER 4720Z

seems that it's a SATA drive and the drivers are not included in XP.
There are some tools available to include these drivers into the XP CD.
Search the net for 'xp-iso-builder' or 'n-Lite'.

This is not necessary if your laptop's got a floppy drive (i don't think so). Then the SATA drivers can easily be loaded by pressing F6 when booting from the XP CD.
