Sounds like the batteries are dead. try recharging if capable or replacing if not.

I think the battery is bad. Try to recharge the battery and place it back. I hope it will retract the lens complete. Consider to buy a new battery or a complete new camera, because batteries can cost almost as much as a new camera.

If your Nikon EN-EL10 battery for your Coolpix S4000 won't be charged, there seems something wrong with your battery or battery charger, so you need a new one. The problem about lens, if something was loose, there maybe a screw and after a term it may cause lens error.

Two quick suggestions first is the battery chamber contacts clean make sure they are clean. Are you using a battery pack with rechargeable AA's ? if so check the battery orientation it only takes one out of place. If you are using the rechargeable battery I know you said the batteries were fine but make sure the power is up on the rechargeable. I've had it where I put a battery on charge knowing it was pretty well dead came back 5 minutes later and the light was green, took the battery of the charger unplugged the charger plugged the charger back in and put the battery back on the charge. It then completed its true cycle.

If it was completely "dead" it will not recharge. You need a new battery.

This happens when the camera is in the ON state and the battery power drains out completely. Please recharge the batteries or insert charged batteries and the lens would get closed automatically.
Please let me know if that works.

i have the same problem. i bought new rechargeable batteries and they went dead really fast and then i put some new batteries in and i took like 5 pics and then the battery indicator said the battery is low. i dont get it whats going on with this camera.

Yep take it off and just recharge it as long as you had no issues before hand it should be fine with a full 24 hr charge

It probably lacked the power to retract the lens. I'd start with recharging the battery and see if that corrects the problem.
