Try this- Unplug the laptop, take out the battery, and hold the power button down for 30-45 seconds. After that, put your battery back in, plug in the AC adapter and turn it on. It's usually the solution in your type problem
If the screen's backlight doesn't come on at all, that's a new screen. You can find more from Gateway's support website. If the screen lights up but stays completely black, that's a motherboard issue, same fix. If the Gateway logo comes up but never goes into windows, that's most likely a hard drive issue, same fix. If you see an error message from Windows, that's a Windows issue. You could use the recovery DVDs that came with the system to fix that. Just put them in and turn the computer on. Press F8 repeatedly until you see an option to boot to DVD. Then follow the instructions.

First check the voltage output of the charger(adapter) and match it with its specs.
Also try to reset the hardware using the following steps:
1 Disconnect battery and the charger 2 Let it sit for 1-2 minutes. 3 Press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds. 4 Reconnect battery and charger and try to start by pressing the power button.
Seems like the Main power board is short circuit. And the cause was not the fuse, it's the unit, and maybe the power transistor, my suggestion is, take it to the expert, Service Center maybe or else to solve the problems.
for me this is the try and test situation, try to remove ram -- look what happen. or try to turn on the laptop with the xp cd in the drive rom, there a similar case and the problem solved after i take out the keyboard and put it on again.
Gateway laptop is really ****.
I bought Gateway MX8711 in March 2007, after 6 months i use it...the hard disk failed.
Gateway replaced a new Hitachi hard disk for me but not more than 8 months and it failed again.
Gateway told me that i have no more warranty because the repair warranty is only 90 days.
I bought this laptop and use it not more than 2 years, the hard disk was failed twice.
Usually Hard disk manufacturer provided 3 years warranty for the hard disk. The manufacturer year of the hard disk is May 2007....they should able to help because the har disk not more than a year being used...but they don't. This is really bad customer service and not fair to the buyer.
I will not buy any Gateway products anymore....i swear.
As long as the laptop still works on AC then your battery is probably dead. It is a few years old already so it probably wasnt far from the end of its useful life anyway.
Try not to drain laptop batteries down all the way to zero - Its best to always have some charge in them to extend the life.
