Failed AC capacitor

I have a home ducted system, totally unbranded and one of the three AC capacitors connected to the starter input to the compressor failed - ie: much somke, case cracked and contents spewed out like a volcano.

Obviously the capacitor will require replacing, but is it likely that the capacitor failed due to some other problem, say in the compressor or the soft start circuit ?

If the capacitor you are talking about is part of the start circuit, a failed current sensing relay could have caused the capacitor to remain in the circuit on start up. whenever i replace a start capacitor, I also replace the relay just in case.

You can find a datasheet located here. Page 14 contains your capacitor's information. As for a connection diagram, it's fairly simple. The dual capacitor (three prong) has a connection for fan, compressor, and common. Common (typically white) goes in the middle, compressor goes to herm, fan goes to fan. You should see the labels etched into the metal either on the side, top, or bottom. As for the colors of the fan and compressor, the brown wire should be for the fan, and the compressor's wire should be yellow. Of course, your system should contain a wiring diagram, which is usually attached to the door. Consult this diagram before assuming any wire colors I tell you are correct. Also, you should have some form of cutoff switch. Ensure this switch is OFF before doing ANY electrical work on your system. 220v in AC units WILL KILL YOU, especially coming off the capacitor. Hi, The Capactor that you are talking about is a dual capactor. It works the fan and the hermitic compressor in one. The leg common is power into the capictor, The fan leg goes to the outdoor fan, the herm leg goes to the compressor. Good advice is when you change the capacitor you should also change any other start componants that are also there. I hope this helps.

I've made some additional checks in the air conditioner. After checking the capacitor, it appears to be okay. The compressor input winding measures 2.6 ohms. The starter assist unit when measured...

Never ohmed a capacitor. But, your compressor should not need the start cap. Take it off completely and run machine. Not sure of your problem either but to ohm a compressor, common to start + common to run should = start to run. To test a capacitor without the capabilities of mfd on your meter measure the amps on the herm wire × 2650 = ?? Divide that by the volts across common and herm. This will give you the mfd rating. Same with fan amps × 2650 =?? ÷ volts = mfds. Remember, not the amps off the contactor...the amp reading on the cap wire. Good luck!!

AC fan running backwards

Check to see if it has some wires for reversing the direction. Some have four wires you can switch around to change the direction. If not make sure the capacitor is connected to the start connection and not the run connection. The wires for reversing the direction should be orange and yellow or purple and yellow and will be shorter than the rest. Hope this helps. Let me know what you find.

hi! there, single phase compressor motor need a starting capacitor base on the rated capacity in horse power,you can check this on the tag of the compressor motor how many horsepower was indicated,it should be for single phase motor starting capacitor has a capacity of micro farads.for a 1 horsepower = 15 to 18 micro farads stating capacitor if you have more than 1 horsepower you can basically proportion the value of capacitor you need or ask the dealer how much capacitor you need on your motor the connection of pressure switch with a four terminal should be connected both on common line L1 and running capacitor line L2 .if you open the cover of pressure switch there are 4 terminals,2 terminals are connected when normally close or no pressure they connected on series connection on the common line one terminal connected to common line of the compressor and the other terminal on L1 to the pushbutton switch to L1 supply line.the 2 other terminals also connected in series withe line capacitors L2 to yhr power supply line.hope this will help you a lot.just rate my fix thanks a lot.

Electrolux split AC 1.5 ton inside fan working.But out side compressor fan stops after two or three rotations.

The 2 most common issues are a freon leak or the outside unit fan start capacitor goes out. It's more likely a capacitor issue. They fail regularly, especially when it's hot out. I had a fan capacitor go out on one of my 3 units last year and it cost close to $300 for an AC company to come out and fix it. I watched them fix it and it's something that you can do yourself if you know what you're doing and are careful to hook it up right. I have three AC units and another capacitor went out this year and I found a kit with detailed instructions with pictures and phone support at hvacrepairkits.com. It saved me over $200 on the capacitor replacement.

Please help our ac compressor wont come on

Hi, did you change, capacitor for compressor too. check compressor overload switch,(relay) normally located on compressor terminals, (where you connect wires to compressor) that's the device that goes klix when compressor goes to start, could be faulty, or maybe low voltage from your mains(house panel) check line voltage, with digital volt meter, some compressor won't start if voltage drops to low, yes fan will work, could also be, your compressor has a lock rotor, (hard start), you can buy a compressor hard start kit, from appliance store, and try to start compressor, or maybe compressor internal winding, are damage, especially now in summer, when you got a lots of voltage drops, check compressor winding, check compressor winding for short circuit, remove cover on compressor, remove 3 wires from compressor terminal, use ohm meter, put one tester lead on copper tubing that's connected to compressor, and next lead to compressor terminal, one by one, if you get beep (continuity) from anyone of those compressor terminal, you got a short- circuit in compressor, you will have to replace compressor, but if there's no short, them try hard- start kit, replace overload relay, you will see it at compressor terminal location, after you remove cover. good luck.

fan = connect wire come from fan
C = common -connect 1 wire from power
- connect1 to compressor term R
-connect 1 wire go to fan

Coleman ac problem

could be bad start capacitor for compressor, cheap fix, anything else could be internal in system or compressor
