Does the dell 78682 monitor have built in sound?

I believe this monitor does not have a built-in speaker. If you have the optional hang-on speaker, it must connect to the laptop's speaker/headphone port (speaker's green connector cable/plug). You cannot use the external speaker and the headphone at the same time unless you are using a Y connector cable.
This monitor has a VGA and a DVI-D ports for video input. Neither supports sound.

Not in the monitor, there is a sound bar that attaches to the bottom of the screen that is optional that added speakers to that model.

The Dell 1702FP doesn't have speakers.The specs of the Dell 1702FP are available here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/1702fp/en/specs.htm . (BTW neither does the Dell 1704FPT.) However, some Dell monitors can have a sound bar (speaker set-up) mounted on the monitor.

VGA cables don't carry sound. Check if a second cable (an audio patch cable is connected to the computer and the second monitor). (There are some cables that actually bundle the 3.5 mm patch cable with the video cable for convenience. (I've seen a number of DVI cables with that bundle option.) The plugs will separate into separate units at each end.

Other monitors do have speakers built in - look for a 3.5 mm audio input jack with the rest of the input connections on your monitor. There are some monitors that accept an HDMI input with a 3.5 mm audio out jack; these monitors don't have speakers and thus are enabling a daisy chain to connect the speakers to the monitor. So you do need to be careful and look for the audio in label.

You can attach a set of speakers to your computer using the audio out (look for a lime green 3.5 mm jack on the back of a desktop). For laptops or to use the front audio ports, look for a headphone jack.

It sounds like you get this problem even when you are sitting there using the computer. If this is the case then there is a problem with the hardware inside the monitor.

Unfortunitally it's something that you would have to have DELL fix. It will involve sending it to them for repair if the monitor is still under warranty.

Make sure if you are using built in monitor speakers that the audio cord is connected between your monitor and soundcard and that it is in the proper jack. If this has already been done check your sound properties in control panel to make sure the speakers are configured properly and something has not accidently been muted. Hope this helps.

Please note it does not come with a Sound System in built you in turn have to connect to the CPU.

What dell model is it. Most did not have speakers built in. There are clips to install an optional speaker bar on most dell monitors. But it has its own bolume control.
