Hi, i have just baught a brand new ryobi kit and have put the new battery on charge for the first time and it has been on charge for ove 2 hours now and is still showing a red light, when it meant to only take an hour to charge, can you help me with this please?

If you have your receipt, check with Ryobi to see if it is still under warranty. It comes with either a 2 or 3 year warranty, depending on when it was purchased. If it is still covered, get it replaced/repaired. If it is not, buy the P117 charger. $30 at Home Depot. It has a 90 day satisfaction guarantee. If it charges your batteries properly, you're good. If not, bring it back if you don't like/want it. My P113 won't get out of test mode now, or charge Lithium batteries anymore. So I bought the P117 yesterday. Works great, and it's a lot cheaper than new batteries! And it has a 3 year warranty.
I would not say they are not defected, but I think they are not getting fully charged. I have the same problem with my battery once I have used it all day and the red light comes on from the fuel gauge. I have the P104 battery. I would return your charger and try to charge them on the new one first. If you have the same trouble, then return the batteries for new ones.
I have several 18v tool sets and for the most part I'm quite satisfied with their performance. I currently use Bosch and Ryobi.
When used with the drill, a battery can last me the whole day. On the other hand, the sawzall will eat them up pretty quick.
The thing I've found common to all brands is that it is absolutely crucial to make sure the batteries are fully charged before they get used for the first time. That first full charge seems to set the bar for subsequent charges for the rest of the batteries life.
I too, have tried the discharge/recharge thing. No help. I can only suggest a new battery and letting get all it can take from the charger the first time out of the box.
Since I've been doing that, I rarely even think to bring my charger to job sites, there's that much of a difference in performance.
sound to me like you have a bad battery, a lot of ryobi batterys don't last like they should i have had the same problem, but my battery was less than a year old and i took it back and they give me a new one.
Same Thing just happened to me, I bought a painter with two batteries. One battery did not charge. Took the kit back, got new kit. Two batteries will not charge.Charged them for additional 12 hrs, still no good. Returning them to Home Depot.
When it is brand new only. If charged overnight and still does not last take back to purchase place and have them test battery..then make them replace it if it is bad...:)
