I have a Haier 4.0 frige; I had ice around the freezer section that pounded out with a knife; now it's not cooling. Seems to be running. Help!

by using a knife , it is very possible that you punctured the evaporator element as it is very thin aluminium sheeting
if that is the case , there is no repair so it is junk
you can talk wit a haier service agent to see in a spare evaporator is available and if it can be installed but the cost of the job will be close to a new unit
lesson one --- only use hot water or fans to defrost fridges and freezers

I think my husband punctured the interior (released the freon?) when he was defrosting (chipping away at ice. Can this be fixed?

It can be fixed, but not by your husband, and I say that assuming he is not EPA certified in refrigerant handling. This is definitely a major repair, one that should not be attempted by the average DIYer. What needs to be done, is to evacuate what refrigerant is still in the system, replacing the evaporator coil that your husband punctured as well as the gas dryer, putting the system in a vacuum to check for any leaks, dehydrating the system, and then adding the exact amount of refrigerant for your model. Now this is a very very basic procedure, ive left out many critical and necessary steps, but it is just an idea of the refrigerator repair that is required for your problem. I hate to say it, but you've just learned a very expensive lesson on how not to defrost your freezer.

My Sanyo refrigerator (model SR-4431S) isn't cooling like before and certainly will not make ice... While scraping ice from the freezer compartment up top, I accidentally made a small puncture in the back...

Hi!
Before you can refill the system, you need to have the leak fixed. They have to evacuate the system, weld shut the leak, vacuum the system for 30 min. and refill refrigerant to proper level. This is a job that by Federal Law has to be performed by an HVAC Certified Technician. Take the unit to an appliance repair shop for repair, this way you'll save on the service call.

Refrigerator not cooling

If there is no cooling at all , before we go further we must confirm the first step of confirming the compressor and gas pressure. So shut off the fridge and leave it off while you clean and check the evaporator for frost. If frost is seen it is a good indication as the compressor is working with sufficient gas within.
Now after about 6 hours plug in the fridge to start. Observe cooling to happen in about one hour and ice to from under three hours.
Earlier make sure that the thermostat was set to normal mode for freezer and fridge. If there is no ice formation we have a big issue as the compressor and gas must be checked out. If compressor is running check the pressure, get help to test gas pressure. If not you will need to fill up ,If gas pressure is good the possibility of the compressor being inefficient is high. In such a case you must take consensus to estimate and decide, if RPM of motor is low check capacitor.
However if Ice forms then observe the fridge for about 24 hours for cooling to continue and the fridge to cut off . If not the auto defrost timer, or the thermostat must be checked.
If defrost timer works but frost keeps forming check while the compressor shuts if the heaters are working, check continuity of the heaters.
So try this test from the outside and make your observations so that we come to the solution.

Unfortunately I punctured the cooling unit coil while defrosting unit, small hole let gas out and chance to repair and recharge or cheap place to by replacement

Just toss it and get a new one. It's not reliably repairable, or cost effective without replacing the evaporator. Next time use a hair dryer and NEVER use anything to scrape the ice off.

Replace Evaporator in mini fridge

The system will definitely have to be recharged; the escaped gas was under pressure and you cannot remove the evaporator without losing its charge.
Since labor costs are not cheap, you might consider looking at craigslist for your area and buy a used one. Even new, they are mostly around $100 US which might be $30 higher than your planned evaporator swap.

I HAVE A HOLE IN THE REFRIG.LINE OF A HAIER MO.HC125FVS

Hi, unfortunate, sorry to hear that, but it could be repaired, you should immediately dried up water/ice around punctured area, prevent water/ moisture entering punctured area (evaporator. lines), it's one of the worst thing, that could happened to any refrigeration system, it will be costly to repaired, if water get into your evaporator lines, compressor oil have to be replaced, evaporator will need to be flush out, repair puncture, change filter drier, it's better to replace compressor, vacuum system for about 2hrs. then recharge. it's better to use welding/ soldering, to repair punctured line, epoxy repair kit can be used to repair punctured (evaporator) lines . you will have to call a mechanic, if very little water entered punctured( evaporator) lines, then flushing of evaporator, (internal cleaning of lines (tube) changing of filter drier, with overnight vacuuming will do the job. take note, job like this, cannot be guaranteed. check cost for repairs, sometimes it's better to purchase a new one, and save yourself some headaches.next time never use sharp instruments in your freezer, it happened to me sometimes, it's what you get your hands on, what's available at the moment, good luck.

Punctured a hole in the freezer compartment

That type of damage is usually fatal to the unit. It is difficult if not impossible to repair in most cases depending on the metal used to make the evaporator, and what kind if equipment the repairman has. You can't fix this yourself, consult a local repairman, explain what happened, and the model of the unit, and ask if repairable what it might cost. Or just buy a new one. And NEVER use sharp objects in an effort to remove frost buildup. Turn it off, put your stuff in a cooler, and use a heat source such as a bucket of hot water in the unit with the door closed

HELP - I punctured the Evaporator coil - is it junk now?

i will give u an experience
if u can see that tiny puncture then u can fix it.
how? well take a 100 grit sand paper and slowly rough the punctured hole on the side of the hole approx 1 inch around it.clean it with a clean cloth. next take some petroleum ether soak a tissue in ththat and with the ether moist towel wipe the area and the hole nicely .now buy fro the market aluminium epoxy tubes. mix a little bit of the epoxy in a i:1 rratio and apply a coating of this stuff on and around the just cleaned hole. After about 12 hours the puncture is repaired now dont touch it.
Take the fridge to a professional refrigerant filling person who has experience in filling gas. he will vacuum the system and remove any ingress of moisture and then begin filling gas. your fridge will be good as new after this job
