After replacing the ink cartridge, the ink light stays on and won't allow me to print.
You need to open up the maintenance window and go thru the motions that you are changing the cartridges and this resets the ink levels back to full and sends data to the printer saying that they are full and the ink light disappears and it prints fine !!!
Just changing them doesn't seem to do the trick like on a lot of printers
I just bought all the cartriges the colored and the black the colored show that they have ink and the black shows its empty

Few things to check.
1. That you put the right cartridge in the right slot
2. If you're using a "compatible" cartridge, that it is definitely (100%) compatible (SOME resellers have a habit of selling older stock with old chips which are not)
3. Look inside the area that the cartridge goes into and look for the little contact wires that should make contact with the cartridge chip and make sure they aren't obviously bent or broken (Don't touch them though)
4. Make sure the chip on the cartridge is clean and not soiled with ink or similar.
One of those should resolve your issue...

I have a similar problem, I replaced the ink cartridge last night and it was working fine, bu today the printing window claims that it is not a genuine epson product and will not recognise it! I was very careful not to touch the chip on the side and have tried re-installing the ink cartridge a number of times. The cartridge I'm using was bought right from the epson website and is fully compatable so I don't understand what the problem is, especially considering it was working fine last night!

epson printer refuses to recognize black ink cartrige, epson has acknowledge this model has a problem
Same problem here. Just installed a brand new black ink cartridge and the printer will not recognize it. I have reinstalled the cartridge several times, turned the printer on and off and made sure that the chip appears to be connecting properly. any other suggestions? (it is an Epson replacement cartridge just purchased today).
I have the same problem and have treied 2 different black replacement cartridges - so the problem must be with the printer and not the cartridge. None of the suggestion in solution #2 worked - does anyone havce any other suggestions?
