My Nuvi 350 won't acquire satellites

My device is about three months old and just the other day, it stopped acquiring satellites. I have tried using the reset button, but the problem persists. I can't find anything on the receiver to determine what else to do or even to verify that the GPS is on. Can you help? Thanks!

My Garmin 350 will not acquire satellite reception. Have tried the reset button and the master reset and downloaded the latest update. What next?

  • JaeLee4 Mar 22, 2008

My Nuvi 350 GPS is about a year old, and has suddenly stopped acquiring satellite signals as well. I've gone to the Garmin site and updated the firmware to 5.30, as well as clearing the user data and hitting the reset button. I've also gone outside to my deck and left my nuvi out there in the hopes that it'll find those satellites again.

No luck so far. I'm very disappointed.

I was driving along and all of a sudden my garmin 360 said "poor satellite reception" then it los reception altogether. I have restarted many times and it can't acquire satellites. I have had my nuvi about 8 months.

My Garvin 350 won't aquire satellite - says I'm still at my last destination, over 200 miles away. I have tried re-setting, trying to aquire satellite standing outside with "clear view of sky", etc. I am in California and this GPS thinks its in Kansas. Nothing seems to work. This is my 2nd Garmin 350 with this problem. What gives?

having this problem with the 360 model. Over a year old. Did it once a few months ago and then fixed itself. Now just stuck, and cannot acquire satellites.

  • garmin29 Apr 19, 2008

Today I was driving and all of a sudden it stopped working. No satelites at all. I spoke with Garmin and the agents there were in a rush to go home as it was near there closing time. I have tried a master reset but date is 31 March 2007 and there is no way to change the date.

Any solution for nuvi 360 to again aquire satellites or is this Garmin's business strategy ?

  • Anonymous Apr 21, 2008

360 can't find a a satellite. I've reset it to the factory settings, reloaded the software and still can't get reception.

  • mjohnston28 May 14, 2008

I have a nuvi 350 and it won't acquire satellites either. i've been in contact with garmin support through email and tried several things but nothing is working. i've updated software, did a master reset, cleared user data (per support instructions) and nothing works. I just sent them an email saying I want it fixed for free, or replaced, or I'll never buy another garmin product again.

One year old Garmin Nuvi 350, was great till I recently upgraded firmware, now won't acquire satellites, tried rebooting with tech support, no joy. Seems to be a common problem.

  • Anonymous Jun 16, 2008

Ditto on your "won't acquire satellites" problem. Mine is 11 months old as of 6/08, and as of three days ago, it has locked on attempting to locate a satellite.

I've done all the master re-booting, but still no correction. Am on hold (20 min. so far) with Garmin Tech Support.

my garmin nuvi 350 GPS receiver won't acquire satellite and is stucked on the last location i was when it happened. i tried resetting but it doesnt work this unit is only 1 year old.

  • Anonymous Jun 21, 2008

Mine went out today. I was driving along with it, and it was working just fine. It beeped, and it said that it was locating satellites. Well it never did, and it's stuck at the location where this happened, and cannot acquire new satellites. I've downloaded the latest software, and tried the suggestions on here about holding the power button and pressing the upper right-hand corner, but nothing's helped. Has anyone gotten theirs to work again? Or am I going to have to ship this back to Garmin. My Nuvi 350 is just a little over 10 months old.

  • wiss_wilson Jun 21, 2008

My Nuvi also stopped receiving satellites. The last time I used it, it took over three hours to finally receive a satellite connection. Today it would connect, although I was only driving for about a half hour. Also, when I first turn the device on, it says ""Updating GPS software". Sometimes it uploads the software (from 0% to 100%), but sometimes it skips at 0% and goes right to the main screen. Either way, it does not seem to help with the satellite connection.

  • Tbuckdad Jun 24, 2008

Same problem- tried all these solutions- no luck! Any more ideas?

  • stormward99 Jun 29, 2008

My Nuvi 350 has also stopped working and is stuck in acquiring mode when I lift the receiver to activate it. I have tried rebooting, resetting, and making sure I am using the most recent version from Garmin (5.50) using the automated Garmin update tool. Interesting symptom/condition. When pressing the upper left hand corner of the screen, you see the message that it is trying to acquire. If you close the back of the receiver and get the message the GPS receiver is OFF, the satellites turn green and it looks like the antenna is getting signals (green bars are moving). It is like the unit is confused and receives signal in GPS OFF mode, and GPS ON mode it turns off the antenna. Thoughts?

  • BillM_07045 Jul 02, 2008

After 13 months my Nuvi 350 stopped acquiring satellites as well. I tried everything mentioned in the solutions below and nothing worked.

I called Garmin and waited a half hour to get someone on the phone. I briefly described my problem and they didn't even bother with telling me to reset the unit. They gave me an RMA number and told me they would repair it because it was only a few weeks outside the warranty.

I have the same problem. My Nuvi is also about 3 Months old. I found a recommendation on Garmin's website that said to try applying pressure in the top right corner of the screen and then turn the nuvi on while still applying pressure, It is supposed to prompt you to totaly wipe the device if you do this, but it didn't work for me. I'm RMAing it.

  • StewJack Apr 12, 2009

Just bought a refurbished Nuvi 350...initially, it would lock onto satellites in a few seconds. Now, if the unit has been turned off for more than a few hours, the unit takes 5 to 20 minutes to acquire satellites. Oddly, if left turned off for only an hour or two, it initializes almost instantly at power up. Calling Garmin on Monday...

  • Hiyacinth Apr 23, 2009

Also have a NUVI 350 and tried some of the solutions but still 'acquiring satellites'. Can someone explain the hard reset? Doesn't seem to work with mine.

I experienced the same problem about acquiring satellite signal even when it's a clear sunny day. After 30 mintues, it was still searching! The unit appeared to have "stuck" in this acquiring mode. The following worked for me: 1) open the GPS antenna 2) press the bottom left screen while holding the power button to turn the unit on 3) enter maintenace mode 4) select diagnostics 5) clear error report, do NOT clear any user data 6) restart unit the usual way My GPS 350 was able to acquire satellite signal in less than 1 minute after the above steps were taken.

Have you tried a master reset ???

Note: A master reset will erase all waypoints or favorites and will restore your unit to the default factory settings.

  1. Turn the device OFF.
  2. Place your fingertip or the eraser end of a pencil in the top right corner of the touchscreen.
  3. Apply pressure in the top right corner of the screen.
  4. While pressing down on the screen, power ON the unit and continue pressing on the screen. A message displays to confirm if you really want to delete all user data?
  5. Touch Yes.
  6. The unit will now restart.
  7. Follow the onscreen prompts to set up the nuvi.
Once the reset is complete, place your unit in an area with clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites. This is best done outside in the open to remove auto windshield coatings from being a possible issue.

I have a 1 1/2 year old Nuvi 350, which started having the much blogged about problem loosing and not able to reacquire satellites. Interestingly enough, the problem started occuring shortly after my web update to 5.50 and GPS firmware 3.0....Hmmmmm.....Garmin? Garmin?

Anyway, I followed the standard instructions; soft reset, hard reset clearing the data. After that last step (hard reset), the unit was totally bricked, would not acquire satellites after sitting out in my wide-open yard for HOURS. The unit had my location as the default - Garmin US HQ in Kansas.

In total frustration, I left the unit on all night. Next morning, it had of course ran out of battery. I plugged it in for a charge, upon boot-up, I was still in Kansas....No satellite locks were made after being on all night.

I was prompted the standard 3 questions, which I'd seen numerous times the past few weeks; Are you indoors, have you moved thousands of miles, is this the correct date?

I answered the "have you moved thousands of miles" question "NO" this time. Before I had been answering "YES" (since the unit thought I was in Kansas, and I am actually in VA which really is "thousands" of miles away).

Voila! Had full 4 green bars within 5 minutes. Been working like a champ ever since - like it was new again.

So - either letting the battery run to full drain gave the firmware a solid kick in the keister, or anwering the "moved thousands of miles" question with a "NO" did the trick, or a combination of both.

But the problem is solved, and I'm not in Kansas any more ;)

Just passing it on...

Here's the solution I received from Garmin:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

I apologize for the inconvenience with your unit not acquiring satellites. It will need to come into us. I have set up a RMA for you to send the unit in. I just need for you to put the following information on the shipping label please.

Garmin Int'l
RMA ZW 0000000
Dock Door #20
1200 E 151st St
Olathe, KS 66062

Please send the unit in by itself. Once we receive the device from you, it normally takes 7-10 days to get it back to you. If you have any other questions, please let me know.

I am afraid my Nuvi 350 is about to become a different kind of toy as I crack open its case and take a look around. I have tried all the fixes I could find on Fixya and elsewhere and nothing works.

Garmin support is only interested in charging $175 to repair my over a year old Nuvi. After reading posts here I was hoping they'd be willing to stand behind their product but it appears a year is a year to them and that's it.

Since a new Nuvi 350 costs $179.99 on Amazon so it's not worth repairing. Considering how many times I have had to wait 10 minutes for it to find satellites in the past and that it won't find them at all now, I don't think it's worth buying either.

So, my solution: poke around in the innards to see what's there, and buy a different brand GPS to replace it.

I had the same problem, there is a master reset. Hold your finger on the right hand bottom corner with the unit off and continue holding while turning the unit on. Follow the prompts when they come on asking if you want to reset all settings. This may erase any saved favorites but should reset the unit. It worked for me. You won't find this in the owners manual.

We have a garmin for a little over a month and we used it driving on a 10 hour trip and it did fine. It was plugged into the car charger the whole time. On the way back we did the same but after 6 hours it went off and went to battery mode and not charger. We got home and used it again in a 8 hour trip and did fine but then when I stopped for gas it would not come on. It acts like the charger is not charging it and the battery had run out. I am trying to charge it now but is not the car charger suppose to keep it charged?

I own & op electronics repair company, Westek Electronics in Nashville, TN. We repair & refurbish GPS units among other things. This issue is typically due to a hardware malfunction and cannot be remedied by software upgrades, resetting, etc. We have repaired many nuvi 350s with this issue. You have 3 options to resolve: 1. install an external antenna, 2. Ship to Garmin and pay $175 or 3. Send it to us for repair for $55.00 (return s & h included). My email is [email protected] and my eBay ID is westek_electronics. We can setup your repair transaction thru eBay if you prefer the added security. Thanks.

Mine had the same problem but mine is 20 months old.
I tried to reset, I charges, I let it run down, I tried everything I could think of.
Then, I read this elswhere on the threads:
If you don't mind losing your saved settings, try pressing the the upper right corner of the screen while you power up the unit.
It will ask you if you are sure you want to erase all of your settings.
Say yes, and it will reboot.
Mine said acquiring satellites for several minutes and then "eureka" it started working again.

This has been a common problem for these devices (Nuvi 350s). Contact Garmin and get a return code; ship it to them (or if you're near the store you bought, return it there). They will fix or replace, for free if you're within warranty.

I had a problem with my Nuvi 360 that it couldn't find the satellites. I couldn't solve the problem with resets or updated software, but a new, external antenna that plugs into the side of the folding antenna semms to have solved the problem. Available from Wireless Finest through Amazon.com - like $11.50. Great solution - can't beat the price.

I have a nuvi350 which was bough new in 2007. A few weeks ago it got stuck acquiring the satellites. This is what worked for me and the unit is working like new!! 1- Istalled the latest software at the garmin website 2- did a hard re-set of the unit- hard reset is done by turning the unit on, the pressing the power off button at the same time as pressing the lower-left screen in the nuvi(is a hiddden button I guess behind the screen). for 4-5 seconds. then press power on and select YES to the prompt and select reset data . Put the unit antena in a 90 degree angle (not completely up, half-way) and then let it sit outdoors(make sure it's fully charged batteries) for 15 minutes. On my case it came out as new and -for some reason- my favorites locations- were NOT erased!!! Hope this helps, as Garmin tech support wanted $89 plus Shipping and no guarantees.... Good luck

I bought this unit and it tells me that I am travelling at 280 mph! Ok, I drive a Volvo and it can't do this speed; OTOH, if I was in my Veyron, maybe I'd believe it. Of course the car would have to be actually moving first.
I don't have time for this. I'll buy a new $25 street atlas.

Phone the GPS manufacturer or look up the website and see if they have a troubleshoot section.

On the main menu screen you can press and hold for a few seconds on the Bars at the top left hand corner of the screen to bring up another screen showing satellite reception strength and accuracy.

Here's what worked for me on a garmin nuvi 310D which experiences the same problem

1. I re-installed Version 3.1 of the software from here http://www.gpsinformation.org/perry/agree.html

2. I set off with the Nuvi which was attempting to acquire satellites.
3. Did a Hard reset using the button behind the antenna
4. Input a destination
5 Bingo!
6. I have now installed v4.4 from the garmin site and the Nuvi is acquiring satellites immedaitely

Good Luck !

Their technical support is very helpful, and I tried all the suggestions above. When nothing worked I called again, and they accepted it for repair even though it was outside original warranty. I think this is a common problem with the newer firmware, don't be scared to call their support (also see solution 9).

The problem might be that your GPS is not able to connect to the satellite.
I'll see what the problem might be.

While driving Garmin Nuvi 250 constantly loses satellite signal. The screen says that it is aquiring a signal. It is also constantly refiguring the route.

If a device is used daily it should be able to acquire satellites in a minute or less. Using a GPS device while it is outdoors with a clear view of the entire sky is the ideal condition for acquiring satellites. Please know that there can be several different factors that may cause a GPS unit to not acquire satellites:
  • If your unit is trying to acquire satellites for the first time, it may take longer than normal to establish an initial position. If the unit is powered on and outdoors with a clear view of the sky this should not take more than 3-5 minutes.
  • If your unit has not been used for an extended period of time (more then a month), it may take 3-5 minutes to acquire satellites.
  • If your unit is indoors, it may not acquire satellites. Even standing next to a window indoors will block a majority of the sky which is needed for a device to locate and lock onto a satellite signal.
  • If you have just finished updating the software in your unit or you have performed a master reset, your unit may take 3-5 minutes to acquire while outdoors as the data that is used to locate satellites may have been erased.
  • If your unit has traveled over 500 miles while turned off or not tracking your travel, it may take 3-5 minutes to acquire even in ideal conditions.
  • If your vehicle has a protective coating on its windshield or electronic devices which interfere with the unit receiving signal, your unit may need an external antenna* in order to acquire satellites.
    • If you suspect this to be an issue, try taking the unit outside of the vehicle with a clear view of the sky for 3-5 minutes so that the unit can acquire satellites. If your unit loses satellites once moved back into your vehicle you will most likely need an external antenna*.
If your unit is still having trouble acquiring satellites, please ensure that it has the latest version of operating software by using our WebUpdater program. Once your unit is updated please allow the unit to acquire satellites outdoors in a stationary position with a clear view of the sky.

Unable to get satellite reception

Make sure you are not moving and that you are on an open field with minimal aerial hindrances. It takes time for the GPS unit to acquire satellite signal and makes it difficult to acquire when you are moving so make sure you stop at an open are till it syncs with at least 3 satellites.

hope this helps!
