The clicking is a good sign. What are you trying that not working? How is the water flow-is it strong? 1) Turn the flow control button all the way to your left - this will increase the flow.
2) Pull the relief valve to simulate water flow and listen for clicking sound, and hopefully, main burner ignition. ( if installed in basement or kindly use bucket to catch water) The 1600 H NG will automatically shut off firing after 5sec of clicking.
3) How is the venting-use a household digital carbon monoxoide detector to measure any backspill from chimney.
4) Was the gas line disconnected in anyway after heater was installed? Air in the gas line will cause the igniter to click but no gas to fired the main burner.
Todate i have installed 11 Bosch Tankless Heaters -- 9(125 NG) Which is the same as 1600 Series
1(1600H NG) and 1(1600P NG)
Guess which one I having problem with- You guess it, however, the problem is their electrical wiring.
BE CAREFUL IN CALLNG BOSCH TECH. FOR SUPPORT. THE ARE GRILLING YOU TO FIND A LOOPHOLE WITH YOUR INSTALLATION TO RELIEF THEMSELF OF THEIR WARRANTY.
That they did. I was able to fix the problem by bending the spring upwards just a little bit to that spark was more in the path of the gas. That seems to have worked.

We looked into this problem ourselves... On our unit there is no wind or drafting problem that could blow out the pilot but still it would often lite and then go out or not light at all (just clicking from the ignitor sparking). I removed the right angled elbow tubing which channels the gas for the pilot from the pilot valve to the ignitor. then manually lit it at the valve (WATCH OUT THIS CAN LEAD TO EXPLOSION) DO not do this unless you are qualified) WE got our hair singed when the main valve opened and the burners lit from that distance..! poof! WOW that was exciting.... anyway we found that if we lit the pilot at the valve, though it fluctuated, it stayed lit... So why would it stay lit at the valve and not at the other end of the elbow which directed it to the igniotor spark and teh burners? It appeared to me that the little "spring" looking receiver which is the destination of the ignitor spark was too close to the exit tubing and did not have enough oxygen in order to light consistently. This seemed to be confirmed by more consistent lighting of the pilot if I blew gently in that direction while it was trying to light. The Solution I have use and is working so far is to streche the little spring out and upward so as to light the pilot a little further away from the exit of that tubing and so far it is lighting every time! At least with the entire front panel/cover ( the large white three sided one with all the controls knobs etc. in it) removed. I hope it works when I replace that...

Is your unit LP or NG? I think moving the spring up helped the most as it put the spark more into the gas as NG rises. These units probably work great with LP.

It sounds like the thermal coupling ( sorry if its spelled wrong) it will be under warranty call them. Bosch heater have a lot of probs...thats great for me the plumber but bad for yall. They sould cover it under the warranty.

Check the silver wire that comes out of the electric control box and goes to the spark ignitor...if that wire is touching the gas valve housing anywhere it may be grounding out or something. We just moved the wire so it wasn't touching any metal and it worked like a charm.
Thanks for the post. When I first read it, I thought it would be most remote of our situation.We've had a problem with a big Boom when it finally lit. I found a break in the silver igniter wire insulation. So, I wrapped it with black electric tape. I turned off the gas and opened a hot water faucet. I noticed a spark jumping out of the end of the electric tape. Evidently, this spark was what ingited the gas. Only after it traveled to this ignition point - resulting in the Big Boom.
Taping it wasn't enough to contain the spark, so I slid a 'drinking straw' over the silver wire. It works - just a little poof when it lights. Thanks for shortening my day. Target181
I've had my Bosch 1600 ng for about 2 years now & absolutely love it! Twice now it has had problems lighting/igniting. I checked voltage, even though only 1.0 vdc, after adjusting the spring has fixed my problem . Don't know why it would need adjusted or quits, but all I do is blow out the little 90degree pipe with the spring, push spring in with phillips head screwdriver & we're in bizness again! the energy this unit saved me over my old electric water heater is amazing!!

The manual says to hold a match near the pilot while the ignitor is trying. It says that if the unit lights the pilot orifice may be dirty or clogged. We cleaned ours to no avail. Then the manual says to check the voltage on the igniter. It should be 1.3 volts DC minimum. I just checked mine, and it was under .85 volts DC. According to the manual that means the electronic control box is defective.

Be sure to check to make certain you do not have TOO MUCH DRAFT. Disconnect one of the flue pipes in the area of your Bosch tanklesss and hold a flat sheet of paper near the flue pipe. If it sucks up and holds to a cold flue you may have so much draft that the tiny amount of gas required for the pilot is simply dissipating up the flue before it can light. I changed my venting to break that suction (I only need this on windy days), and now my 1600H lights every time.
we are having the same problem. it worked fine for the first 3 to 4 months. then there came some strong wind. now we are lucky if it lights half the trime. I had mine installed by a professional plumber because i dont know much about it, but they don't seem to know much more about them than i do. all i can say for sure is that the copper connections don't leak. by the time installation is added in, we paid about twice what the standard water heater costs. my wife is not happy.

TEMPORARY FIX FOR HOT SHOWER NOW, light @ ignitor with a lighter with metal tube, not a match. I have had a Bosch 1600 ng for about two years now & we absolutely love it! However we have had problems with the unit not lighting twice. The voltage checked out to be a little low (@ 1.0vdc) but still sparking fine, this is the clicking sound. To fix I pull off the little tube with two screws, be careful not to loose screen between gas nozzle & tube, blow out & adjust spring in end of tube closest to ignitor. I use a phillips screwdriver to push in, just move it to adjust and it should light every time. :)
Any chance you're still around this thread? Can you describe the 'little tube' some more? or take a photo of it?
Hello Tom Sorry I haven't been around for awhile, I didn't realize I had a question till today. I'll add a couple pictures of the tube shield I remove & the tube I clean.
The picture on the bottom shows the shield , two screws I remove which holds the metal tube 90 deg elbow with spring in end and screen at bottom.

I spoke with Bosch. They said I had a bad microswitch. They instructed me to disconnect the wire going to the microswitch and then short out the end going to the ignitor with a paper clip or screwdriver while the hot water was running. As soon as I did this the water heater sparked up and hot water started running. They told me the microswitch was an "un-necessary" backup switch.
I had this same problem about 5 years ago and they instructed me to use the paperclip too. Worked like a champ until I got the new part for the fix. Fast forward 5 years, and I am once again having the same problem, only this time they won't tell me how to do the paperclip trick and I can't remember! Do you recall how to do the paperclip bypass? Any details much appreciated to get me through until the new part comes. (This time I'll take a picture!)

Check the voltage on the Orange Wire on the right side of the unit...it should be around 1.3VDC while sparking. If not then just like wengerplumb said, defective box.
While sparking does the pilot light with a bbq lighter? If so try manually bending the pigtail at the tip of the pilot tube to direct the flow of gas towards the spark.
