hyjackers from 2009 to 2019 wow.
first off NO PC stated at all (wow1)
ST3320820U2-RK (external drive,)
this drives has 3 parts, not 2, not 1.
the enclosure with drive.
the USB cable.
the power pack. missing or wrong pack or dead pack the HDD can not spin up at all. the 3.5"drives uses lots of power to run
most will need at least 2 full amps of power to spin up,
no USB port can do that here. OK?

and always check the drive on 2 PCs not just one.
and test it on all USB ports. as some ports will be dead for sure upgraded to w10, big time failures of USB3 ports.

now the rule of spin modern SATA
first the drive gets power, if not it can NOT spin
then USB connects, if not no comm.
then USB connects and the driver for this new DRIVE chassis loads. when that longs full communications are established to the HDD and now for the first time, (now) the PC can send the SATA drive startup command, and then waits for the COM reset signal
from the drive, and if that works and the drive ready status shows up the drive is NOW ON LINE.

the take off from that is 2 fold

to spin takes power, then drive ready signal and last comms established or NO SPIN it is.
one can remove the drive from the casing and plug it in to any PC and test it, even pull data off it.
but Id have to see the ***** drive to be sure and 100% sure need to read your ACTUAL HDD label...

I have bunch of those here, all DIY made, using fan vented cases and 2TB up drives, 3.5" all I backup duty rotated &"enterprise grade" all.
never ever a problem. but if was would test them direct. to PC.

My seagate free agent 320gb hard drive won't power on

click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or

if you can see your usb but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver

if this fails to fix the problem

check usb leads for secure dust free seating

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems

if this fails to fix the problem
type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter.

Then restart computer then check.

Also locate the below key and make sure it's value is 3 not 4. HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\usbstor make sure start value is 3 not 4

if still no luck
you might have to install a usb 2 or 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap
hope this helps

My external hard drive fails to spin

The hard drive needs a proper regulated power adapter for the hard drive to work.
If the hard drive is a 5.25 inch drive it requires 12 volts and 5 volts power supply.
If the hard drive is a 3.5 inch drive it requires a 5 volt power supply.

My Seagate portable 320gb external hard drive fell on the floor now my computer and laptop don't see it( won't let me get in to the hard drive) , how do I fix this , Important files on it Help please

Since this external hard drive is USB powered and felt on the floor, you could have a broken USB connector or interface card, both located inside hard disk case, you should contact Seagate technical support or repair service, or if you have electronics skills, you could open and check hardware by yourself.

I have a Western Digital MyBook Essential 320GB and it is not responding. The green light is on, but the disk isn't even spinning. I've had this thing for at least 4 years. Is it toast? The harddisk will...

If the hard disk is not spinning then the hard disk is faulty.
The adapter case may be OK especially when you plug it into a working computer's USB port and it detects the adapter but not the hard drive.

Seagate 1.5 TB Free Agent will not turn off

Definitely, You must turn off the External Hard drive when it is not in use, because as it is external and it comes with an external power supply, the power supply will not cut-off automatically when the computer is turned off. This is not the case for Internal hard drives that are built-in in the computers, their power supply will cut off automatically when the computer is shut down. You can turn ON the external HDD when ever you need, that is even when u are working with the computer and if you doesnt need the hard drive then you can left it OFF....When ever you need the hard drive, you can just turn ON...and dont unplug and plug the USB wire frequently, let it be plugged in the computer. Whenever there is a need unplug and take it away. Because if you unplug and plug it back many times, then the usb port may become wide, which results in frequent disconnection of the device that is connected to that particular usb port...
Guess it is useful....

Dropped my1TB EXTERNAL Seagate drive, now not WORKING

Probably nothing. Hard drives are delicate machines seeing as th have microscopic lasers that are held by a tiny little arm between the discs. If it fell hard, so will all your DATA

Maxtor personal storage 3200 - flashing green light.

Solution:
First, disconnect the power cable from the back of the external hard drive:
If the power supply LED continues to blink:
  1. Connect the power supply to a different outlet (or instead of connecting to a power strip, connect directly to an outlet in the wall).

  2. If the power supply continues to blink after changing outlets, this indicates that the power supply is defective and needs to be replaced.

  3. If the power supply stays solid, then reconnect to the external hard drive and see if the drive spins.

Power indication light flashing

Hi, you may want to try connecting it by USB if you're currently using firewire or the other way around and see if it works. If this fails, you are probably better off using diagnostics by Seagate @ http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=7f4e19e0babfd010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD&locale=en-US#. Try to use the Troubleshooting or FAQ or if you feel comfortable using their utilities, download SeaTools. Hope this be of help to you. Good luck.
