Hello, I have an epson stylus photo 1400 ink jet printer that needs fixing. I'm not exactly sure what is wrong with it, but my 1 year old son was pressing the power button on/off a number of times, and then a loud grinding noise started, with both the paper/ink buttons blinking in red simultaneously. I've added a quick video which shows the problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwdymBIwEtg The only thing I have read is that the blinking lights indicates a fatal error and that possibly the wasted ink sponges are full and need to be replaced, but that does not explain the loud grinding noise. Please help!
Both the paper/ink buttons blinking in red simultaneously means fatal error. Use AP for figure the latest fatal error code. Btw, i have Service manual for 1400. Contact me at aicaxz(at)yahoo(dot)com

Turn off the power and look inside the machine to the right hand side. Just in front to f the print head you will see a white plastic dowel (see photo). Use something technical - like a finger, pen or screwdriver - to push this dowel in. You can then move the print head by hand to the middle of the carriage.
Once moved, turn the printer on and watch it travel back to the home position. If after returning home the dowel pops back out and does not retract itself, you will need to strip the machine out and rebuild the ASF section. Sounds hard but its just a few plastic parts to take apart and reassemble whilst looking to see if anything is broken.
Get a service manual; for the machine HERE if you need to strip it out.

The pads do need to be replaced. It is not as simple like the 1280. it does need to be taken into an authorized service center.
we are, and located in southern california.
I have taken the pads out and 95% of the time are all completely soaked. you can do what you did, but you will not get the full life out of a pad.
thanks

Hi,
It's hard to provide a definitive answer to this without detailed info on the exact flashing light pattern but it's possible you're right in this instance.
If you start up the status monitor you should get more information on this to confirm or indicate any other problems.
If it is the service required issue then you need two resources.
1. the A10_IPR utility
2a. Some kind of external waste ink tank to collect waste ink
OR
2b. To get the printer serviced at an Epson service center
Hope that helps... and if the problem is a "General error" please report back with more information re: symptoms and we'll see what we can do to help further.
Regards,
Martin

Sorry, I meant the title to read 'Epson 1400 printer repair' !!
Thanks for the feedback. In the end, I took it to a professional repair place and it's going to cost me about $150 to fix.
