Motor moves 5 in" and reverses and light blinks 5 times

first off there is no such thing as a DV4, sorry!!!!
dv4-1000, 1280,1300, right?,. it's 10 old, the battery is that old is no good, the dash matters too if present (details do)
or is it a DV4000, 13 years old not 10 .??? why not post the full model and p/n off your PC service tag so i can show you matching manuals to read and follow, ok?

that is blink code, try to learn how to read them , counts them.
here is a list of tests, simple. to harder.
1; Remove that old big battery 10 years old , it shorted.
2: run on AC power only. in fact can do this forever.......
3: next is the fan working? fan is next and now, does it?
4: flash codes, count them and report them, easy no?
5: the coin cell is next , it is 10 years old that too is END OF LIFE
why not replace it too ,now even if good, to avoid problems later, ?

My answers are for DV4000 only not the DV4-1000 and up vast series of laptops. vast versions of them...
the coin cell , HP name RTC battery, all die at 5-7 years old.
yours is well beyond that. ok?

we take it it out if lower than 2.9v (a dmm meter is cheap)
we replace it, 3.3 is normal when the fall to 2.9 (think cliff)
they fail fast and the BIOS GOES NUTS,
in fact the PC can be totally dead.

that caps lock flashing are codes, learn to count them
my wild guess is it is the code for BIOS NVRAM corruption.
the cure is posted here over 1000 times.
and a million times at HP.com real, we are not HP.

First try adjusting the force limits. They are up on the motor head. If this works do a 2x4 safety reversal test afterward. It also may be the rpm sensor. Sometimes this can go out with the gears. There is an led light on the motor head. If it is flashing 5 times in a row then it is this for sure. You can get replacement parts at searspartsdirect.com. Thanks BB

If you try to close, do light bulbs on motor blink. If yes, problem is eye. Clean, alighn better or change. If not , try a little more down force

If your main light flashes 10 times and the door reverses to the open position when you use your remote it is a door sensor problem. It is sometimes very hard to see if one of the sensor lights is flickering.

If the main light does not flash then you can try increasing the down force just a little. This control is on the rear of the motor unit near where all those white wires go.

Check the small LED near the smart/learn button. If it is flashing a code of 5 blinks then a pause and 5 blinks it is the RPM sensor. This is a small printed circuit board just in front of the motor.

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door reverses it is your door sensors. Most probably out of alignment but they could always go bad. See if each of them has a small light that should be lit and not flickering. If one of them is out tweak the sensor a bit to see if it will come on. If not one or both is bad.

If the door hits the floor and reverses but the main light does not flash 10 times then the door is traveling too far. On the side of the motor unit you will find the 'down limit'. Turn this in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Some adjusting may be necessary.

The code for the 5 blinks is "RPM sensor or motor overload". Make sure the door is free to move and the trolley isn't jammed against anything.

The code it is sending by flashing 5 times is 'RPM sensor or motor overload'. Is the door stuck in the open position?

Just fixed this problem tonight. Had the 5 blink/flash thing. Opened it up and saw that the motor wasn't spinning so it wasn't a bad rpm sensor. Jumped the red to black and then the blue to black to verify motor worked. At that point assumed it was the logic board not telling the motor to start, but I could hear the click of the relay. Pulled the logic board out and noticed a solder joint that had failed directly behind one of the relays. Resoldered that joint and the garage door opener worked again like a dream. Hope that helps someone else.

The gear needs to be changed kit #41c4220a. Be sure to change the bottom bushing on the motor mount.
