My VCR was working fine today. I was able to watch a previously recorded from TV VHS tape. I rewound the tape and left it in the VCR. I had it scheduled to record a show while I watched another show. The timer recording started up, but 5 seconds later it stopped, the tape rewound, and the VCR ejected it. I tried another tape and it did the same thing when I tried to play it as well. I cleaned the VCR using the Head Cleaner, but that didn't help at all.
You have not mentioned the make and model number of the vcr. Any way the problem is due to end sensor or related circuit. End sensors are photo diods which you can check the shorting with a multy meter.
I took off the top today, cleaned it out with compressed air, and got it to work. It's recording and playing, but now it won't rewind. It's an Emerson VCR and I believe the model number is VCR4003.
OPEN THE BOTTOM COVER, CONFIRM THE CAPSTAN MOTOR IS RUNNING WHILE PRESSING THE REW.BUTTON. REPLACE THE LOADING BELT
I will do that. I set it to timer record last night and it ran but it didn't record anything (I am using an older VCR to rewind the tape). It ran the allotted time to record, but didn't cover up what was already on the tape. Is it just time to get a new VCR?
I want to add that I had tested it yesterday and when I record (not timer record) it did record for me.
actually what is your problem, is it rewind not working or timer recording
you need no go for new vcr.
need not go for new vcr
It's not doing either. It's regular recording, but not timer recording (the process goes but it doesn't actually record) and it's not rewinding.
have you properly set the chanel for recording,
Yes, I believe I have. It's not recording a blank screen. It's recording nothing. Nothing covers up what is already on the tape. The old show recording a while ago is what is shown.

There are probably a few different ailments which can cause this. One is if something is afoul in tape transport. I'd think the problem would occur whether in record or playback however.
If the tape takeup reel drive is slipping, tape takeup might intermittently stop, and cause the machine to power off (this is to avoid spilling tape in the machine). With the cover off, insert a tape, hit play, and see if tape takeup is steady, especially nearer the end of the tape, when the right reel is filling up.
An associated problem is if the reel sensor is intermittent- this sensor tells the logic whether or not the takeup reel is turning- again, this is to avoid massive tape spillage and damage.
Another possibility is a dirty mode switch- this switch tells the logic circuitry what position the mechanicals are in. It is probably located on the underneath side of the deck. Sometimes it can be disassembled and cleaned with a cotton swab wetted with contact cleaner. Others must be replaced.
Hopefully this helps- perhaps another tech has a better solution too.

Simple. The Cassette's 'Prevent Erasure' tab is missing. Just cover with Scotch tape and reload. Now try recording.
