My KORG ESX-1 stopped working. Although the knobs and functions seem to still be working, no sound comes out of it. Apparently all the presets were deleted (for whatever reason). I tried to rebbot the system (using the step-by-step instructions in the manual) but no good. I then purchased a SmartMedia/ XD car to try to reload the factory presets (from the KORG website), but it seems that it cannot be formatted (keep getting the message 'FORMAT ERROR'). As for now, I cannot reload the preset samples and loops (or do anything for that matter). Can anyone find a solution to this problem please? That'd be much appreciated. Cheers!
The card that you used to transfer the files HAS to be (1) FORMATTED by the ESX-1 unit FIRST, (2) then put the card into your computer's card reader and download the files. (3) Put the card BACK into the ESX-1 and try reloading the factory presets. Good luck!
I would suggest going to a store and getting another SmartMedia card to try. Heck, but a really cheap one (4GB), put it in the unit, and try formatting it then. The other option is to format the card directly from your computer FIRST. (1) put the card in your reader (2) click on "My Computer" (3) right-click on card and select "Format" (4) select "Restore Device Defaults." Put back into KORG unit and try formatting again. Just be sure that the card is not in "lock" position either. Good luck!!

Hi, have you solved this problem yet? If you have, share the solution with us please! :)

First thing would be to check the power supply voltages. It may be the disk drive is failing. Drives are inexpensive, might be worth a try with a new drive. Also check that cables to the drive have not been loosend by handling.

This is likely a power supply problem. It is important that all interconnected equipment be powered by the same receptacle OR source or isolation such as DI's be used for system safety.

Cheers for the help! However, the main problem is that the card cannot be formatted on the ESX-1 (I keep getting the 'FORMAT ERROR' message). Does that have to do with the fact that I'm using a SmartMedia/ XD card adapter? I also have a SmatMedia reader (connected via USB to my coimputer). I can download the files to the card no problem, but since it is not formatted on the ESX-1 it cannot be read. It's quite frustrating to be honest (especially after all the hassle I went through, buying adapters and cards). All the best!
I am having the same issue. did you ever figure out how to fix it ?
