I have a new Hitachi portable drill that employs a lithium ion battery. The drill works fine, but the charger, that I have only used once with no trouble, no longer works. The red light went on went I plugged it in, and it stayed on, as it should of, when I put in the battery, but then soon mysteriously went off. There doesn't seem to be any power getting to the charger. I, of course, checked the outlet, in order to see if that were where the problem lay, but the outlet works fine with other electronic items. I also tried plugging the charger into a different outlet, but that too had no positive effect. Any advice that you might offer me regarding what might be wrong here, and how I might fix it, would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Firemedic13; Most chargers like yours have a fuse inside them. Remove the screws that hold the charger together. The fuse will be on the low voltage side of the transformer. Un-solder and replace it with one of the same value. If the charger is not held together with screws (doubtfull) you will have to carefully cut along the seam where they were glued together. A dremmel tool works good for this. After repairing use some ABS pipe glue to re-seal them together. If the fuse is not blown then the unit will require testing by someone that is proficient with a multimeter. Most times it is the transformer that has fried a wire. If the sides of the transformer have any burnt spots on it then it will be the culprit. Hope this has helped. Best regards; HELP2DIY Please dont forget to rate my answer.
If you store the battery for extended periods (i.e. months), it spontaneously self-discharges. If the voltage of the overall pack drops too much, its electronics places the pack in "safe" mode and will not allow a charge. Try opening the battery pack and use a voltmeter to verify polarity. Then use a car battery charger (or another 12-18V battery) to charge the battery for 5-10 mins, bypassing the electronic charge regulation circuit. This should raise the battery pack voltage above the "safe" threshhold. Do NOT OVERCHARGE--limit this bypass charge to a few minutes. Then reassemble the battery pack and use the regular ("regulated") charger.

i have pulled my charger apart and have tested the fuse and the wires to the charger all seem to be ok also i have inspected the circuit board and tere doesnt seem to be any burn marks on it
I have the same problem, with my 18vdrill modle number DV 18DL. The light comes on the charger, you put your battery in and the charger stops working. I have taken the charger apart.the fuse is fine,there are no scorch marks on the board, the transformer or any thing else.Seems to be a common fault. can anyone(some from hitachi would be nice) help.
Harvey's answer is right on the money if your battery has discharged too far. If you don't know AC from DC electricity and understand what he means about polarity, find a friend who does or risk shocking yourself or blowing up the battery.
