SOURCE: How can I get the fax and copy to print clearly?
Still sounds like a bad ink cartridge, try cleaning the bottom of the cartridge with a Kleenex and soapy water. Dry it off real good.
Look where the cartridge sits and clean the same way.
Ink jets are dead technology.

SOURCE: number of color ink toner cartridge for hpfax 1220
go to this web site for the type and number of your cartridge.
You DO NOT have to buy from them, but it is the first I found with the number.

Welcome to Fixya
Please see procedure below:
First is to press the "Access Cartridge" button on the HP 1040 Fax's control panel. Button is the closest to the number keypad on the front of the machine. Second is to pull down on the top of the HP 1040 Fax's front panel. Pull up on the bottom of the cartridge compartment cover to reveal the cartridge. Third, remove the old HP 1040 Fax cartridge by pulling it toward you, then up and out of the cartridge carriage. Fourth, remove the new HP cartridge from its packaging, making sure to remove the clear tape over the bottom of the cartridge. Insert the cartridge, leaning it slightly toward you, then push the lowered side up until it clicks into place in the cartridge carriage. Lastly, close the cartridge compartment cover and the HP 1040 Fax's front panel. Press the "Start" button, then "1" on the numerical keypad to indicate you have installed a new cartridge.

SOURCE: Cartridge carrier contacts appear dirty.
did you try the copy function? just to be sure that the problem is in your machine, not on the sending side.
Just make sure you are using a genuine Lexmark cartridge and not some remanufactured, refilled or clone cartridges. Please follow the steps below to identify and fix cartridge
issues:
Hi Alan I think it is the cartridge that is causing your issue but I cant promise that it is.I can tell you from many years experience it very rarely is an issue with the printer breaking it is 99% of the time inferior consumables causing printers to fail, and sometimes wrecking printers so even when the customer does use good consumables it is too late and the damage is done, but we can't be sure of anything unless we start with basics and get 100% brand new Original Equipment Manufacturers carts (OEM) and stick them in. (no I don't work for Lexmark;)
1.
Make sure the printer is on.
2.
Open the printer cover. The print cartridge carrier moves and stops at the
loading position, unless the All-in-One is busy.
3.
Remove both cartridges from the carrier.
4.
Close the printer cover.
5.
Unplug and re-plug the printer into the power outlet to reset it.
6.
When the printer turns on, reinsert one cartridge first.
7.
Close the printer cover and check for any errors.
8.
If no error appears, reinsert the other cartridge. Close the printer cover.
9.
Replace whichever cartridge is causing the error to appear with a new
cartridge. You may also try to insert a different known working cartridge to determine if the cartridge you are currently using is faulty.
If the problem continues, please contact Lexmark Technical Support Center for additional assistance.
