A leaking heat exchanger in a swimming pool heater, really isn't that dangerous, it's the side effects that may create a dangerous situation? A heat exchanger only has water going through it.

Unfortunately for the owner of a pool heater that has a leaking heat exchanger, the previous answer is pretty close to accurate. I say that, because what may appear to be a leaking heat exchanger, could be a flange gasket or, especially with the type of heater that you said you have, might be the thermostat probe that goes into the front header, could have failed.

But... saying that you do, have a bad heat exchanger, that could be close to more than half the cost of a new complete heater. You have to do the evaluation, comparing to the overall age of the heater, is there a lot of rust and corrosion buildup in the bottom of the cabinet, inspect the combustion firebox, do you have broken fire tile? All of this needs to be put into the equation, as you consider the comparison, whether you should repair the heater by replacing the exchanger, or just replacing the complete heater.
normally a general rule of thumb for me, is that I really should consider replacement (taking everything into consideration), if repair approaches more than 50% cost of replacement. The advice of a nonbiased, honest service provider may be able to assist you in that decision.

I suggest you have a reputable heating contractor evaluate your situation. A leaking heat exchanger can be very dangerous, so either the heat exchanger needs to be replaced or you need a whole new unit.

Where is the heat exchange in a rheem pool heater located ?

The PVC plumbing is hooked into the front header, the front header is attached to the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger looks like copper finned tubes with a steel plate on each end. You need to disassemble heater working from top down to get to the exchanger. A skilled tech can replace an exchanger in under one hour service call.

Have a Pentair Minimax Plus 400 heater leaking water. How do you get the top and flue collector (gas is turned off at source) off so you can see if the heat exchangers are leaking, or is there another way...

There are multiple screws around the perimeter, remove them then lift of the top. Then there is multiple pieces of sheet metal that also needs removal. Then the baffles sit right on top of the heat exchanger which will easily be removed once the sheet metal is removed. then inspect the exchanger.

Good luck

Water flows out the condensation tube even when the heater is not runiing causing the pool to leak down. The heater is 4 years old. Thank you.

It sounds like there is a leak in your system. The condensation tube is to drain off the water because one of the byproduct of combustion is water and it condenses on the heat exchanger. Since it is only 4 years old it might be under warrantee for this issue. The problem might be simple but could be very expensive if the heat exchanger has a leak.

I'm working on a n-0931m noritz and i have a 61 code flash and water leak out the blower housing i assume the heat exchanger is bad. is a heat exchanger difficult to replace

61 code is a fan motor abnormality. It typically indicates the fan is damaged and needs to be replaced. It can be caused by water leaking onto it from the heat exchanger.

The heat exchanger isn't difficult to replace, but it is confusing if it's your first time doing it. I'd recommend calling Noritz for assitance.

LLD125 pool heater leaking water from inside

My heat exchanger was cracked. I found an old welder who knew how to weld the cracks for $100 vs $900 for a new exchanger,. Also ordered replacement seals for the 2 chambers. I used high temp automotive engine sealant as an additional sealant precaution. Also inspected tubes and cleaned corrosion. Works fine last 3 years. Takes some mechanical skills.

I have a hayward H200 series heater and th eheat exchanger is leaking. I have pulled the heat exchanger out and cant see anything visible it is probably leaking inthe area covered by the fins. I have...

NO. The heat exchanger comes complete with the header and as you know, is very expensive. You will not be able to see a hole wherer it is leaking. It is nakes to the eye. But if water is coming out, the exchanger is bad and will need to be replaced. Where are you located? I can probably beat any price out there. Part number is idxlhxa1400.

Heater leaks water on lower left side (side where gas attaches) towards rear. Do not want to take totally apart to get to leak. Side does not appear to come off.

The heater sides do come off. Your heat exchanger will be what is leaking. Some people (I have never tried) have had them welded at a local radiator shops with some sucess though it is likely the heat exchanger will have several thin areas likely to fail in the near future if you have a leak now.

New heat exchangers are expensive. If you would like a quote, contact us with your heater model and serial number at www.arrowpools.net.

The longer you leave it leaking, the more likely you are to damage other parts down in the bottom of the heater so it is not something you should let sit. If you are going to go without it for a while, close the water off if you have a bypass. Otherwise, consider having the plumbing re-arranged to bypass the heater.

Coolant leaking into car from passenger side

Coolant passes through the heat exchanger below the dashboard heating the interior air from the engine heat. The heat exchanger or its pipe is leak somehow.
A temporary measure is to change the heat/cool knob to cold position. This disconnects the radiator.
Note: If the leak is before the valve then it will not stop leaking.
Also if you use the heater then You need to get the pipe repaired.

Water leaking from rubber gasket on tubes in heat exchanger

Are you sure it isn't just condensation? A leak will not go away. If condensation, nothing to worry about. It will go away.
