Every time after using function F5 to switch to an external display, several keys on the keyboard are reassigned. The F-key and M-key are two for sure that begin performing functions other than typing "f" and "m" after using Function-F5. I can't figure out what is causing this.

if using XP go to my computer, right click>properties>hardware tab>device manager>look down list for keyboard, click '+' sign and highlight your keyboard and right click and select uninstall. Restart the notebook and the keyboard will be installed automatically along with the drivers and should set it back to default.

There is a small ribbon cable that connects the keyboard to the motherboard inside. It is very likely that the ribbon cable has become loose enough to no longer make contact. If you send me the model of your computer, I could probably find you a diagram of pictures to guide you through taking the keyboard out of your laptop to re-seat the cable.
SOURCE: Function Key Issue
I'm wondering if you have a function lock key. Try turning on numlock and scrolllock while typing. Either that or you could use system restore and possibly the integrated diagnostics of the laptop to see if the issue is hardware or software related (hardware would show up in diagnostics) for you to contact Acer. Usually one goes to them by pressing and holding the Fn key (ironically) and pressing the power button, or by selecting it from a boot menu (by pressing F2, F8, f12, or whatever key it is on boot up.
I would suggest for the mean time, just taking the key off and holding it down using tape. Or you could press the key a few times if it's causing trouble, or press and hold it (if that is what causes the Fn lock, I'm sure it exists for a 'good' purpose but have never actually used it). I might experiment with this one :P. Definately sounds absolutely not like water damage :P
Hope this helps, stay spicy and happy lappying :)

Press the Num Lock key. The Num Lock indicator light should go out.
Have a good weekend.
