Check all the push buttons and switches on the front of the unit are set where they should be set. In particular the speaker and tape monitor buttons. If there is a "pre out" "main in" set of jacks in the back of the unit, then be sure it is jumpered with stubs or if that unit uses a switch to perform the jumpering function be sure it is enabled.
