The set is only a couple of years old and reverse on the locomotive has never worked. It runs in forward, it smokes (switch set to on), and the whistle works. When I hit the direction button on the transformer the locomotive stops and it seems as if all that happens is power is interrupted to the track. When I cycle through the transformer going on then off 2-3 times it will start going forward again. Reverse switch is set to on. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
You do not specify which Santa Fe steam engine you have, but I am going to guess it's the Santa Fe RTR O27 set...
Here's a link to the manual for it. Go to page 9, read the last paragraph on the page. It may be the answer to your problem

Hope this helps.
SOURCE: lionel train won't reverse
there should be a switch under or in the cab section that turns off/on the reverse function.
SOURCE: Lionel Polar Express Berkshire Locomotive will only go in reverse
No doubt the transistor in the motor controller inside the engine is shorted TIP31C Q6 If you have the skills you can repair the unit. Parts are cheap, like 50 cents. Expense is shipping. Have repaired at least one that had the probblem you describe
good luck

It sounds as though you may have two defective transformers. Lionel has reported problems with some of their smaller transformers. I would have the transformers and the engines checked by a Lionel service station or contact their customer service department for help.

Turn the power to the track off and then back on. The engine may stay still because the train is in neutral. Turn the power off and on once again. The engine should now go forward or reverse. Turning the powere on and off again will return the train to neutral. On and off again should make the train move in the opposite direction. If all of these steps work then the problem is in the "Direction" button of the transformer. But if the problem still persist, than the "E" unit in the engine needs to be serviced. More times than not it is the E unit. The direction button is a simple momentary off switch that has few moving parts.

it forward to release the two rear clips from the frame slots.
2. To remove the lamp, gently push the lamp down and turn counter clockwise to disengage
the lamp from the socket. Refer to Figure 6.
3. Replace the expired lamp with Lionel part no. 600-0363-300, available from your local
Lionel Authorized Service Center or Lionel Service. (For more information, see Lionel
Service on page 12.)
4. To reinstall the shell, first insert the rear tabs on the body into the slots on the frame. Line
up the screw holes on the frame and body shell, and reinsert the screw. Make sure all of the wires are inside the body before you tighten the screw.
